Adam Driver missed out on the role of Lex Luthor in ‘Batman vs. Superman‘ because of a scheduling conflict. What kind of conflict could keep someone from starring in one of the biggest movies of the year? THE biggest movie of the year. Variety is reporting that Driver is in final talks to star as the villain in ‘Star Wars: Episode 7.’
Driver, mostly known for his work on HBO’s hit series ‘Girls‘ and seen briefly last year in a brief role in ‘Inside Llewyn Davis,’ will play the main ‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ that is described as being in the vein of Darth Vader. There are no concrete details but we’ll assume he’s another Sith Lord.
This was the same role that Benedict Cumberbatch was rumored for and it appears that either side of that deal got cold feet and called it off. We’ll assume that when J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan began their rewrite of the script (originally written by Michael Arndt), it may have changed the character.
It’s an interesting and bold choice, though one that will certainly get its fair share of scrutiny, mostly for people who are familiar with Driver only from his work playing a Brooklyn hipster douche on ‘Girls’. But, J.J. Abrams has always had a sharp eye for casting if nothing else, so we think it’s smart to trust his vision.
Also expected to join the cast are Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher and while they’ve all danced around their participation for months, there has been no official confirmation just yet. It’s interesting to note that the Hollywood Reporter is saying that almost all the main ‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ cast members have been decided on, but because of the high level of secrecy, few reports are leaking out.
Filming on ‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ is expected to begin this April in London so the contract negotiations for the actors involved are all being finalized now. Expect to hear much more on the new ‘Star Wars’ movie in the coming weeks.
‘Star Wars: Episode 7′ opens in theaters on December 18, 2015.
