Ever since Batman teamed up with Robin and Batgirl to take on Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy and Bane in 1997’s “Batman & Robin” (a film that still exists despite fandom’s constant attempts to erase it from existence through sheer force of will), fans have equated crowded superhero sequels with bad superhero sequels. With “The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s” cast ballooning to include not only Jamie Foxx as Electro, but Paul Giamatti as Rhino, Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn and Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn, fans have gotten a bit worried about the follow-up to last summer’s delightful hit, “The Amazing Spider-Man.”

But fans should have no fear, because “Amazing Spider-Man 2” screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci know what they’re doing. MTV News caught up with the writing team at the premiere of their latest film, “Star Trek Into Darkness.”

“I think you have to go into it and say, ‘is this character essential to the story or are you just throwing him in for no reason whatsoever’,” said Kurtzman. This should come as a relief to fans, who saw the final installment of the original Spider-Man trilogy crowded with the likes of Sandman, Venom and the second Green Goblin.

Check out the entire interview below for a tease at who else Spider-Man may eventually thrown down against (note: it’s totally a joke, a really well-timed joke).
