Up until now, the parents of the original Robin Dick Grayson were best known for their deaths more than their lives, but that will change in 2015. TVLine reports that the Fox television series Gotham has put out a casting call for the characters of Jonathan Grayson and Mary Lloyd. These two characters will reportedly debut in episode 16 early next year, with the intention to foreshadow the birth and origin of Robin.

In comics, Jonathan Grayson and Mary Grayson nee Lloyd were highly skilled acrobats who worked as the Flying Graysons for a touring circus company called Haly’s Circus. Renowned for performing their dangerous act without a net, the duo plummeted to their deaths during a stunt thanks to a sabotaged rope just a short while after their young son Dick joined their group. Bruce Wayne (a.k.a. Batman) was amongst the crowd for this fateful performance and sought out the young Grayson as a troubled soul and an orphan, taking him under his wing as surrogate son and later as a sidekick. Grayson would act as Robin for years before stepping out on his own under the moniker of Nightwing. Recent in comics, Grayson segued out of superheroics in favor of being a secret agent in the just-launched series Grayson.

Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller was quoted by Entertainment Weekly back in November that plans were afoot to touch on Robin’s role in Gotham, albiet from a distance.
