Will Harrison Ford be cracking the whip in 2 more Indiana Jones Movies? There seems to be a lot of credence to the rumor that he is indeed signed on to do more Indy movies, and that his contract to do so is tied into his contract with Disney for the upcoming Star Wars films. Fans of the Indiana Jones franchise can let out a cheer because rumor has it Harrison Ford is here to stay!

The Star Wars: Episode VII star has been whipping things up as the heroic ‘Indy’ since 1981, but it doesn’t look like he is prepared to rest on his laurels just yet.

Market Saw is reporting that there are two more Indiana Jones movies in the pipeline that are linked to Ford’s contract for the next Star Wars film.

Whereas the details are currently undeniably shady, it is a highly likely scenario. Despite the abject horror of Indy fans at Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, the film was the third top grossing movie of 2008 and Harrison Ford still has the magnetic pull to drag in the big bucks.

To borrow the words of Marion (Karen Allen) in Raiders Of The Lost Ark;

Indiana Jones. I always knew some day you’d come walking back through my door. I never doubted that. Something made it inevitable
Do you guys think there is a gram of truth in the rumors? Does Harrison Ford have what it takes to make the next Indiana Jones movie a success?

When Disney acquired Lucasfilm it not only acquired Star Wars, it also acquired the rights to Indiana Jones. Star Wars has been Disney’s focus since day one and any inquiries into the status of Indiana Jones basically resulted in a “we’ll do something with it but we’re not focusing on it”. That appears to not be entirely true if reports from Internet source Market Saw (who first broke news of the Star Wars sequels) are true. If this report is true, the will-he; won’t-he regarding Harrison Ford’s return as Han Solo has been contingent on Disney committing to make not one but two more movies with him returning to star as Indiana Jones. This is Ford’s idea with no rumor of Spielberg or Lucas’ involvement. Market Saw says Ford is signed for Star Wars Episode VII, so if this was a condition, we have two more Indy films from Ford coming.

I love Harrison Ford. I love Indiana Jones. I think he’s one of the most iconic characters in the history of film. I also know that Harrison Ford is 71 years old and the last Indy movie was a painful exercise in bad casting, bad scripting and bad directing. You can find a lot of people who will stick up for the Star Wars prequels. I don’t know anyone who likes Indy 4.

I can’t even imagine a scenario where an Indy played by Ford (well into his seventies by the time they’d get two finished) works. They clearly were trying to pass the torch to Shia LeBeouf in Crystal Skull and fans did not embrace that and LeBeouf ha since gone kind of insane and retired from acting. The parts of Crystal Skull I liked (and there were bits) was Indy in the role of academic; seeing him become his father. How they would parlay that into two more films without a younger protagonist to do the legwork is beyond me. Maybe Ford wants the series to live on and wants two films to work with and groom a successor to the franchise? This is extremely curious news if confirmed by Disney and something I’ll be keeping a close eye on over the next few months. This is the quote from Market Saw’s source:

“Regarding Harrison Ford, two more Indiana Jones features are in the negotiation stages as per Ford’s contract clause on Star Wars, which is the primary reason he didn’t ‘publicly’ or ‘privately’ commit, or so I’m told.”
