Mere minutes after the announced departure of Tom Hardy from Warner Bros.’ upcoming “Suicide Squad” film, The Wrap has reported that Jake Gyllenhaal is being eyed to fill the role of Rick Flag in the DC supervillain team-up movie from director David Ayer.

The information comes from an “individual familiar with the comic book project” who states that the actor has become Ayer’s “favorite” to play Rick Flag following Hardy’s departure. The DC Comics project would partner Gyllenhaal up with Ayer once again; the two previously worked together on the 2012 film “End of Watch.” Warner Bros. declined the Wrap’s request for a comment and Gyllenhaal’s representative has not yet commented.

The role would be Gyllenhaal’s first ever comic book role. The actor was previously eyed to take over as Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man in “Spider-Man 2,” but Tobey Maguire recovered from his back injury in time to start filming. His sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal, starred in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” as Rachel Dawes, a role she took over from Katie Holmes.

Gyllenhaal’s performance in 2014’s “Nightcrawler” was met with rave reviews and earned him a Golden Globe nomination for his performance as a thief turned amateur crime photographer.
