Star Wars 1977
I think everyone here pretty much knows the original story of Star Wars. I was trying to figure out what made it so popular. There were other space series that had a great following such as Star Trek, Buck Rogers, and Battlestar Galactica. Star Trek has stayed strong over the decades, but I think Star Wars has the edge on popularity. I know that the battle scenes, camera tricks, and modeling were a breakthrough for the time, but I think it was the simplicity of Star Wars that made it so popular.

Luke was a simple farm boy, Leia although a Princess was still imprisoned on the Death Star, Han always having money problems and his beloved hunk of junk was always breaking down and being worked on. The Rebel Alliance didn’t have top notch equipment, and was always on the run. It was relatively average people fighting for one cause against evil. They were backed up against walls but they always kept fighting, sometimes things broke, but sometimes the light shined and they did win.

I think it was a major reflection of the times in 1977. The average person struggled but they kept fighting and I think a lot of people connected to that in the original Star Wars movie. Now I know the whole space thing and the film’s action and merchandise attracted a good many of fans, but I still feel the simplistic connection of an average everyday person was made through the characters Lucas created.
