THE POP EXPOSE ‘The 1987 G.I.Joe Movie’ By Mitchell Smith!

I never hear a lot a chatter about the 1987 G.I. Joe Movie. For me this movie was right in my wheelhouse as I was 12 years old and I had 1982 Joes and I probably spent more hours than I should have thinking about getting home to watch G.I. Joe then paying attention in class. Oh the struggle kids will never understand of making it home in time to catch an episode because if you missed it you missed it. No Netflix or DVRs in those days, but I’m sure most of you know my pain. Anyway with the 2 feet of snow my area got last week I had some time to relax and watch some TV, one movie being G.I. Joe. The first 2 distinct voices that stood out were the WWF’s own SGT. Slaughter who played himself in the movie and was part of the one of the greatest times in wrestling history. Most people had already watched Slaughter, Hogan, and many other WWF wrestlers competing on the TV and Slaughter was an instant hit and fit for G.I. Joe. Second was Don Johnson voicing the Character Falcon.
The green – Green Beret was sent to be whipped into Joe shape after messing up in Royal fashion. Anyone around my age surely watched a little bit of Miami Vice or was a huge fan like I was. So for those 2 voice alone I instantly fell in love with the movie, but I love Joes and I loved the new characters and the older characters alike those with or without updated uniforms, it brought the old and the new together and meshed them into the future of Joes. I wondered about one part in the movie, when the Joes try to escape and deformed Cobra Commander escapes while RoadBlock is blinded and they jump into the water to escape, Cobra Commander says in a very Gollum like voice that there is a path through the mountain. I was wondering if they had tried to bring a little piece of Tolkien’s books to life by incorporating this line. It wouldn’t be the first time references were added to movies of music such as legendary rock band Led Zeppelin had done on more than one occasion.
If this was the intention I wondered if anyone else had ever gotten that reference and if so maybe Peter Jackson and his team was influenced by this scene when they brought Gollum to life. Just a thought, maybe a crazy one. I thought they did a nice job with creating some cool characters such as Golobulus, Nemesis Enforcer, and Pythona. I got the 3 pack for Christmas that year, but I never understood why Pythona got the stiff arm, she was one of the best characters in the movie and there was a story there in itself as to where she came from, but still no original O-ring style figure. I was pleased to see when they did a modern figure of her, but I didn’t have the dough to drop on her, so I’ll have to make do with a choppy customized figure I made, my hands are as steady as Jim the Wacko Kids from Blazing Saddles. But that’s a horse of a different color LOL. Over all I thought especially at 12 years old but even now the characters, the story, the music, and just all around this is one of my favorite movies.
