Universal Pictures is moving ahead with their reboot of 1994’s Timecop, the sci-fi film that famously starred Jean-Claude Van Damme and his shaggy mullet. It went on to spawn a direct-to-DVD sequel and even a short-lived TV series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal has hired two writers to pen Timecop’s script. They are Mark and Brian Gunn, who previously wrote the screenplay for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. Meanwhile, the film will be produced by Marc Shmuger (We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks, The Spectacular Now). The writers and producer aren’t the biggest news to come about of this project.

The original Timecop was heavy on action and sci-fi. Why wouldn’t it be? It starred Van Damme and centered on a futuristic society where time-travel was regulated by police. Unfortunately, the reboot will go down a path we know all too well. The trade claims, “This version of Timecop is a more gritty and grounded police story with the sci-fi in the background, though it will still have the main character on a personal journey.”

The sci-fi aspect will take a backseat to the bigger picture. The new Timecop will be less like its predecessor and more like Rian Johnson’s Looper.
