It’s alive! With only two episodes of “Breaking Bad” left ever, AMC is now in the process of expanding upon the universe of one of its other hit-series: “The Walking Dead.” “Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer,” explains AMC president Charlie Collier. “We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters.”
With a target date of 2015, this new series marks the third “Walking Dead” show to hit the cable network after the original “Walking Dead” series and Chris Hardwick’s “Talking Dead” talk show. For “Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman, it will mark his fourth television project following the small screen adaptations of “The Walking Dead,” “Thief of Thieves,” and “Clone” over at Universal.
“After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of ‘The Walking Dead’ universe,” states Kirkman on the companion series. “The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”
With over 10 years of experience writing the “Walking Dead” comic book under his belt, Kirkman is certainly capable of fabricating a whole new ongoing story that is guaranteed to keep viewers interested as well as piquing the interest of people new to the “Walking Dead” universe.
The most exciting thing about all of this, in my opinion, is the fact that this companion series will be starring an entirely new cast of characters never before seen on the “Walking Dead” TV series or comic books. As proved with Daryl Dixon, a fan favorite “Walking Dead” character that exists only within the universe of the TV series, sometimes leaning away from the comic book source material goes a long way.
Perhaps, we’ll even get a glimpse of some notable “Walking Dead” comic book characters that have yet to appear on television. Abraham, Eugene, and Rosita, for example, are just a few of the other survivors that are out there in the world of the zombie apocalypse that have yet to come into contact with Rick’s group. If they don’t pop up in the upcoming fourth season of “The Walking Dead,” there’s a good chance that we could potentially see them in this companion series.
Of course, this is all based entirely on speculation. With the “Walking Dead” companion series still a good two years away, all we can do now is wait. In the meantime, the fourth season of “The Walking Dead” returns on October 13th with new showrunner Scott Gimple. Kirkman has previously stated how he believes that this upcoming season is the best of the series so far. Here’s hoping he’s right!
