The Pentagon, 2011
Colonel Joe Colton looked around the small conference room as he waited for the two generals to arrive. A small table, six chairs, and a large flat screen TV were the only furnishings in there. On the table sat a wireless keyboard and mouse. The Colonel could not help wondering why he was pulled from his unit on such short notice. He was set to go to Afghanistan to oversee several ODA’s from the 3rd Special Forces Group in the next few days but was ordered to scrap that and report to The Pentagon ASAP. He wished he was back with his unit as he did not like being in the company of generals and their bullshit politics.
Suddenly the door to the conference room opened and in came his superiors, Major General Austin and Brigadier General Flagg. Colton started to get up from his chair when Austin waved him off. “At ease Colonel” Austin said rather impatiently. Colton sat back down while the two Generals seated themselves. Colton had been warned by his commanding officer about “Old Iron-Butt Austin” and his rather brutish behavior.
“Good to see you Joe. How was your trip?” asked General Flagg.
“Thank you sir, it went well”, answered Colton.
General Austin spoke “I’m going to cut to the chase Colonel, we are needing you to head a new special operations unit”.
Colton was taken back for a second as the news hit him.
Flagg noticed his reaction “Yeah you heard correctly Joe, we are wanting you to head a new counter terrorism unit”.
Colton thought for a moment. “With all due respect General with all of the other special operations units already out there why are we needing yet an additional one?”.
Flagg and Austin looked at one another. “Well Joe it’s like this”, Flagg responded, “With the current war on terror we are finding the need for more special forces type of units. Hell the Marines finally saw the need for one just a few years ago with the formation of MARSOC. Also our current ones are stretched out thin in many trouble spots around the world so we are in need of more troops that specialize in this kind of warfare”
“The old days of standard infantry and tanks on the battlefield are all but non-existent today” Austin added. “Plus with the ever increasing exposure of previous secretive specops forces such as Delta and DEVGRU we are in need another force to operate in secret and hopefully stay that way”.
“So basically we want to start fresh with a new super-secretive unit?” Colton asked.
“Exactly” Flagg answered.
“There was a lot of exposure of specops teams with incidents such as The Battle of Mogadishu and just recently the death of Bin Laden, “Austin added, “we can’t have anymore exposure. We need a team that has total deniability”.
“We want you to head it Joe because we feel you are the most qualified for it”, Flagg said “You have a track record that is second to none”.
Colton felt his mind rolling with the possibility of leading his own unit. “What kind of support can I expect?” he asked.
“Anything you need Colonel”, Austin answered. ”It will be funded by the Pentagon’s black budget”.
“Black budget sir?” Joe asked.
“Meaning there is no trace of where the money comes from and how it is spent” Austin said.
“Any other contenders besides myself?”, Colton asked, “Also who would I report to?”
“We have one or two others in mind Colonel,” Austin responded, “but to be honest you are our prime candidate. As far as who you would report to that would be General Flagg who in turn would report directly to me”
“We are needing this new unit up and running in about 8-12 months Joe” Flagg said “We would like to see at least two fully operational squadrons in place. With that in mind this is going to be a multi-service unit so we can hopefully fill the ranks a lot faster with highly qualified individuals”.
“You’ll also have your own intelligence platoon” Austin added “along with a small aviation unit and other such support services”.
“This is a huge opportunity Joe” Flagg stated.
“How long do I have to decide on this sir?” Joe asked.
“We’ll give you 24 hours Colonel” Austin said. “But…” he paused” we really want you for it and we really need to get this thing rolling ASAP”.
Joe paused for a moment thinking it over. “Okay I will give you my decision tomorrow”.
“Alright Colonel, if and we hope when, you make your decision we will go over the details at a later meeting. Until then stay put here in town for a day so we can hopefully have that later meeting tomorrow after you’ve made your decision”, Austin said.
Austin and Flagg stood up, Colton followed suit.
“We will be anxiously awaiting your response Joe” Flagg said as he shook hands with Colton.
Joe shook Austin’s hand “Thank you for the consideration General”.
“Of course Colonel” Austin responded “We hope to hear a favorable response”

Nigeria, 2013
The target house loomed in sight as the two Blackhawk helicopters made their way to it. Aboard one of the helicopters Sergeant Major Conrad Hauser reflected on his time in the service. Even with 20 years of experience in the military he could still out run and out shoot most of the other NCO’s under his command. He had been contemplating retirement once his 20 years was up when he was offered a position as a Squadron Sergeant in a newly created specops team almost two years ago. Too irresistible to pass up the offer he decided to go ahead and accept the position. Plus the fact that Conrad had been recently divorced when he was offered the position helped with that decision as well. With nothing to tie him down he figured might as well give Uncle Sam some more of his service.
Special Counter-Terrorist Unit-Foxtrot was the official name for the new unit. Some unofficially called it G.I.Joe in honor of their commanding office, Colonel Joe Colton, although he took exception to that. It was usually best to say it while the Colonel was not around least he proceeded to chew ones butt out for 10-15 minutes afterwards. They had only been operational for six months but had spent a year before that getting the unit operational. They only had two squadrons of actual operators but were in the process of creating and filling out a third one. Most of their operations had gone well and the only “casualties” they had taken thus far were guys injuring themselves during the selection process.
Hauser, or Duke as he was called, heard the pilot tell him over his headset to get his team ready. The two crew chiefs opened the two doors to the night sky and Duke felt a gush of cool air hit him. Duke yelled at his team to get ready with the ropes. His team readied themselves to fast rope to the target house. Hopefully intel had been right and this was the correct house in which to do a snatch and grab of their intended target, a Boko Haram weapons supplier by the name of Abejide Umar.
The two Blackhawks hovered over the street in front of the house. Suddenly one of the crew chief’s yelled to drop the ropes. Duke’s team started to fast rope from the helicopter once the ropes were dropped. Two designated marksmen covered his team from both doors to provide any cover in case they were fired upon. When his team had inserted without incident he took off his headset, put on his night vision goggles and proceeded to fast rope down. The rest of his team was already taking up covering positions. The team from the other Blackhawk, headed by Capt. Ralph Pulaski, was already at the front of the house. Duke’s team was making its way to the rear. So far the mission had gone without incident but entering the target house was bound to stir up the hornets nest. They had probably already heard the choppers and had taken up defensive positions in the house.
Duke caught up with the rest of his team. He radioed Capt. Pulaski (or Steeler as his teammates called him) that his team was in position and ready to enter the house. Steeler gave the green light to proceed. Duke tapped the shoulder of Staff Sergeant Rafael Melendez to go ahead and set breaching charges on the door. Zap, as Sgt. Melendez was known as, proceeded to set the charges to blow the door in. Duke stood behind Zap and readied his M4. Steeler announced to Duke that his team was already breaching the front door. Zap’s charges blew the door inward and he then entered the back door with Duke and the rest of the team following closely behind.
Duke heard the familiar sound of an AK47 firing and saw Zap take out one of the inhabitants of the house. “Clear!” yelled Zap. Zap rounded a T-shaped corridor and checked the left side while Duke checked out the right. He saw movement up ahead and someone starting to point what looked like a rifle at him. Duke fired two shots and dropped the person. “Clear!” he yelled. He saw a stairway down that hall that went up. Duke and his team headed for the stairs.
Zap cautiously peered up the stairs and saw nothing. He started to slowly walk up the stairs when he heard some movement. All of the sudden a militant with an AK47 jumped from behind the top of the stairs and fired his rifle. Zap put two rounds into him and watched him fall backwards. He moved up the steps and threw a flash bang around the staircase. Zap rounded the staircase and saw a hallway with three doors. The door at the end of the hallway was open and two militants with AK’s stood there taking aim at him. Zap fired his M4 while taking cover behind the staircase. The two militants opened fire.
Zap grabbed another flashbang and tossed it into the hallway. When it went off the firing stopped so he rounded the corner into the hallway and saw both militants dazed. He and Duke fired their M4’s at them and dropped them both.
Duke’ team came up off the stairs and he signaled half his team to clear out the other two rooms while he, Zap and two others went towards the room that had the two militants. Zap threw a flashbang into the room and waited till after it blew to enter into the room. Inside was a table turned on its side in an apparent hastily made barricade. A militant peaked over the top of it. Duke yelled to drop his weapon. The militant pointed an AK47 at them. Zap fired and hit the militant in the head. He went behind the table and fired two more shots into his chest and head.
Meanwhile Steeler announced to Duke over the radio that the lower level of the house was clear.
“Did you find Umar?” asked Steeler.
“We took out all the militants on the second floor. Going to check for identification now” Duke answered, “Stand by”.
Duke took out a photo of Umar from his chest pocket and walked up to the body of the militant that was behind the table. Just then the other half of his team entered into the room.
“The other two rooms are clear Duke” said Sergeant First Class Lonzo Wilkinson.
“Good deal” said Duke “come have a look at him. I am trying to positively identify this body as Umar”.
Sgt. Wilkinson walked over to the body.
“The two bullet wounds in his head is making this difficult as you can see” said Duke. “Otherwise what features we can make out look very much like him”
“Agreed” said Wilkinson.
“I think we need to take the body for identification” said Duke. “Go ahead and bag him up while I radio Steeler.”
Duke radioed Steeler that they were taking the body.
“Affirmative Duke, “responded Steeler “also get down here as soon as possible. We found the two crates of weapons. Looks like the boys and girls in Intel were correct and we definitely got the right house. Also this may not be something but every bad guy we bagged was black except for one. A very pale white guy was apparently hanging out with our friends”
Springfield, USA 2013
“Gentlemen and Anastasia, good to see you again and thank you all for coming out”, Rex Lewis said as he entered the conference room.
The six men and one woman at the table rose and greeted Rex.
“We are still short one person Commander”, stated Jason Lee.
“So we are” said Rex. “Anastasia have you heard from Amauri?”
The one woman at the table answered “Yes Commander he is on his way”
“Good, I hate to do our monthly meetings without everyone present” Rex stated.
Just then the door opened and in stepped Amauri Sanderson. Without saying a word to anyone he walked straight to his chair and sat down.
“Good to see you Amauri”, Rex said.
“Likewise Rex” mumbled Amauri without even looking at the commander.
“Okay let’s get started” Rex said. “Anastasia care to go first?”
“Yes Commander” said Anastasia “Arbco profits did really well this quarter, with a 3.7% increase from last quarter. Also I talked to Destro earlier today and he had a shipment of surface-to-air launchers and missiles delivered to the Nigerian military. They were stolen from the military by a Boko Haram arms dealer. Now the Nigerian government is looking for a private military company in which to train their counter-terrorism forces. I have already submitted Arbco for the job.”
“That’s good news” said Rex. “However did he say if his Iron Grenadiers assisted in stealing that shipment?”
“Yes one of his agents provided the intel for the shipment and also assisted with its procurement.” said Anastasia.
“Good” said Rex, “Is that agent also providing tight security for the shipment as well?
“Yes Commander” said Anastasia.
“Major Bludd what is the situation over in Afghanistan?” asked Rex.
“The Afghany government is extremely paranoid over there” answered Bludd “they don’t trust their own military and police forces so are turning more and more to companies like ours for security. It’s a huge win for us”.
“That’s what I like to hear” smiled Rex..
“We do have a serious competitor though, “said Bludd “a company called Vaughn Services is trying to make a bid on one of our potential customers. I did some intel and found out they have a warehouse full of munitions set up in Kabul. If we can compromise their own building it may make for a weak case of them being accepted”
“Kind of like ‘a security contractor that cannot even protect their own assets’ type of scenario?” asked Rex.
“Exactly”, said Bludd.
“Jason” said Rex “can we have ‘Firefly’ pay that warehouse a visit?”
“You can count on it Commander” said Jason.
“Good deal” said Rex “Fly out with Major Bludd when he goes back to Afghanistan and make it happen”
“Will do” responded Jason.
“All right Ken where does our ‘off the books profits’ stand?” asked Rex.
“I have 40 kilo’s of coke coming in on Wednesday”, answered Ken. “Copperhead said he would have the shipment at our usual rendezvous point then. Headman apparently has a guaranteed buyer for half of that.”
“Wow sounds like he is getting some Grade A customers versus the usual street junkies” said Rex.
“He didn’t say as he keeps information on his clients private” said Ken.
“Of course” said Rex . He looked at Amauri “Amauri?” he asked.
Amauri looked up at Rex for the first time since the meeting “All the businesses in Springfield are up to date on their ‘protective services fees’ except for one floral shop. The owner is claiming times are tough but I will have my Dreadnoks remind the shopkeeper that not paying taxes can be tougher”
“Good”, said Rex “if it continues then you know what to do”
Amauri nodded.
“Tommy how many do we have for the initiation tonight?” asked Rex.
“Only three but they seem extremely eager to join the ranks of Cobra” answered Tommy “Two served in Irag and the other one is a former cop. One of the Iraqi veterans is a former Army infantryman while the other is a former Marine who served as a military policeman. The former cop is from Springfield’s finest.”
“Sounds like pretty solid additions to Cobra” said Rex “Tomax, Xamot what’s new with Extensive Enterprises?”
“We have a new contract on shipping out Afghanistan’s minerals, “answered Tomax” But we have also made a deal with some of the poppy seed growers to transport their product under the guise of just shipping the minerals out”
“So basically we are doubling our profit for each shipment “said Xamot. “And of course since Arbco provides security for our ships you get your standard 20 percent of the profits”.
“Smart business move, although I am sure you have those poppy seed’s well hidden when they do ship?” asked Rex.
“Of course Commander” answered Xamot.
“Good. Alright everybody meet back at 8pm for the initiation,”said Rex ”So get those three new recruits ready Tommy. Bludd and Jason set up to fly to Afghanistan on the next available flight afterwards. Amauri take care of our florist. Sounds like you will be flying out on Wednesday Ken so we’ll see you when you get back. Also find out what you can on Headman’s 20 kilo client. With that much coke the person is probably going to need protection or guns so let’s see if we can provide any extra services for him or her. Anastasia keep me informed of the pending deal with the Nigerian government. Tomax, Xamot let me know how that first shipment goes.”
“Anything else?” asked Rex looking at everyone at the table. When no one answered he said “Okay then I officially dismiss this monthly meeting of Arbco Security Corporation”.
.
Nigeria, 2013A man with a V-shaped scar on his face was sitting at an outdoor café when he picked up his cellphone and dialed to Arbco Security Corporation in Springfield USA.
“Anastasia speaking” said the female voice on the other end of the phone.
“This is Scarface, sorry to bother you” said the man “but I have some urgent news”
“What is it?” Anastasia asked.
“That arms dealer in Nigeria was hit last night. Looks like it was a coordinated military operation, possibly foreign due to eyewitnesses stating that Blackhawks were present. No one in the dealer’s house survived”.
“Shit!” said Anastasia “so the Nigerian government has their shipment back?”
“Correct” said Scarface “but not only that but the Iron Grenadier agent was apparently found dead there as well”
“Dammit” Anastasia said “This is not good!”
“Should we notify the Commander about this?” asked Scarface.
Anastasia thought for a moment “Let me handle that but say nothing to no one. Anyone else know besides you?”
“Just you and I” said Scarface.
“Okay give me some time to figure this out. The Commander is going to be pissed that the Iron Grenadier agent was not able to provide decent security. I don’t want him to know right now. Basically Arbco has now lost out on a good contract with the Nigerians now that they have their weapons back” said Anastasia. “Find out what you can on the assaulting force. Most like military but could have been another security contracting company as well”
“Will do” responded Scarface. He ended the call with Anastasia and then promptly dialed back to Arbco in Springfield, this time with the Commander’s direct extension.
