Get the Skinny on ‘Lucy’!

Lucy-trailer

The thing to remember when you go to a movie such as this is,
It was written by a writer, not a genius, not a scientist, not even a televangelist or college lecturer, it is written by a writer.
A person with a wondrous imagination.

The story is based on a myth:

Quote:
“It turns out, though, that we use virtually every part of the brain, and that [most of] the brain is active almost all the time,” Johns Hopkins University neurologist Barry Gordon

Now that we know that the movie is 100 percent fiction, lets delve a little deeper.

Scarlett Johanssen is very convincing as a scared to death person.
She winds up doing a favor for a boyfriend that leads to facing a crime boss. Then she becomes a mule for a new drug CBH4. I will give you a moment to look up CBH4.
A kick to the stomach and she becomes a superhero.

No she does not become a hero in any sense. She becomes evolved. Evolved in the way that the writer thinks we would evolve. A way he dreamt we would evolve perhaps.
Written and directed by Luc Besson.

What would really happen if we reached our untapped potential?
What are the driving forces of humanity?
According to Morgan Freeman, err I mean Professor Norman, we have two driving forces.
Immortality when threatened and conditions are unfavorable and
Reproduction when not threatened and content.

The real story here is not the crime boss chasing after this new drug and it is not what Lucy can do with her power, and she can do a lot.
It is not about the Paris cop trying to protect her or Professor Norman’s theories.

What it is about, is humanity. Lucy was just an average person. Some may say a less than average person. Her profession is unclear. She certainly does not want to do what Richard asks her to. When she gains her knowledge she separates herself from humanity at a certain point in the process.
She becomes cold towards her friends, her enemies, even her allies. She could have saved every constable in the university with a simple thought. She does not. It is not because she is occupied with attaining 100 percent. It is because she is no longer human and now the humans surrounding her are lesser beings just like the way we treat plants and animals. We observe animals and plants do things and do not give (most) of their actions a second thought. The more Lucy uses her brain capacity, the colder she becomes.
The key moment in the movie is when she tells the Captain she keeps him around as a reminder. No she does not need him.

The humans in the movie represent fear, control, the quest for power and wealth.

There is also a theory about time that comes to pass in the final moments, the message is a bit slurred and not presented very well. I imagine this is because it is such a lofty concept, and the choice was made to try and keep things simple so as to not alienate audiences.

I also wonder how much of the movie is based on philosophy. Lucy meeting Lucy lets us know that she has come full circle.

Despite being based on scientific myth, and despite some hard to read themes, I did like the movie. Johanssen showed some fine acting chops. I know I could not have squirmed around in that cell half as well as she did.

There were some interesting theories on possible evolutionary steps and a nice subtext as a comment on humanity. I could have done without the science lessons and conjecture. However exposition is the name of the game in movies anymore.
The need for writers to try and educate us on what story they are trying to convey needs a new method. Then again maybe they could leave it up to the audience to think on their own and if they are a good enough writer, their thoughts will match the audiences.

I enjoyed the movie for the most part. It made me think and if a movie makes me think, in my book it has entertained me.
The movie likes to take you out of the movie quite a bit. Scenes of animals hunting, landscapes, time travel, outer space telescopic images, all scenes that have nothing to do with the main story.
I would most likely watch it again, but would not go out of my way to do so. If I happened to catch it while flipping stations I would probably stop.
I don’t think I will buy the DVD. Share your thoughts after the JUMP!
