Unveiling 2009’s Toy Marvel: The Rise of Cobra, Must-Have Figures, and Vintage Vehicles!

Story by Mitchell Smith

Welcome to the Outpost. Today I’m taking a look at the G.I. Joe toy line of 2009 as a whole. This was an interesting year as marketing became the driving force for toy sales. Hasbro now knew they had the kids from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s with 2 successful years of selling figures and vehicles. Now they wanted to draw in those kid’s kids. The original Joe line was so successful that it would be nearly impossible to match that with the kids from the new millennium. 2009 was The Rise of Cobra movie year and brought lots of cool figures.

Many people enjoyed the uniform figures of many classic characters. Me personally I would have loved to see a GI Joe movie with the same uniqueness of characters that the cartoon had, but I guess that’s neither here nor there. I’m not complaining as I did pick a great number of these figures up. Rampage, Charbroil, and Flash were among my favorite Joes and my 3 favorite Cobras are Storm Shadow, Zartan, and Baroness. There was 2 sets that were Awesome, Assault on Cobra Island and Defense of Cobra Island. I picked up the Assault set and love every figure, I only got Dr Mindbender out of the other, but I would have loved all those vipers, but I had to cut costs somewhere.

Lift Ticket with the Ghost Hawk was a great vehicle but the Rhino is my favorite Joe vehicle I got and the Steel Crusher is my favorite Cobra vehicle from this year. Overall this was a very cool year and my only regret was I passed on clearance Python Patrol Conquests at Target. There were 5 on sale for $17.99 each. One of those would have been Awesome, but I was dumb and left them behind. Overall this was a great year with lots of vintage style vehicles and lots of new vehicles. What is your favorite figure and vehicle from 2009? Make sure to check back for our next discussion.
