Looking Back at the G.I. Joe 1989 Cobra H.I.S.S. II: A Nostalgic Review

Story by Mitchell Smith

Welcome to the Outpost. Today I’m taking a look back at the G.I.Joe 1989 Cobra H.I.S.S. II. The original Hiss was an awesome vehicle and one I had as a kid. I got it second hand from my cousin and had many great battles with it. The original Hiss mold has been used many times over and there are several versions with this original mold. When 89 rolled around I had a much deeper appreciation for the design of vehicles then I did back in the day.

Although I would soon be leaving my Joes behind this was one of the last great vehicles I received as a kid. The vehicle was a step up being able to hold 2 figures in front, 1 in the turret, 4 in the back, and 2 standing on the rear foot pegs, making this a tank and a personnel carrier. This was a great addition to the Cobra lineup and I’m happy I had one as a kid. As a collector I think I have a greater appreciation for the amount of figures this vehicle can transport.

I think it really captured the end of an era as we would say goodbye to the great eighties and welcome in a new and rather bumpy era at least on the lines of GI Joe. Who had this vehicle as a kid? Who likes this version of the Hiss better then the original? Make sure to check back for our next discussion.
