A Nostalgic Dive into the Classic 1986 Film Howard the Duck: Why It Still Holds Up

Story by Mitchell Smith
Happy Friday Everyone! Today I’m taking a look at the Classic 1986, Howard the Duck. Based on a relatively obscure Marvel Comics character created by Steve Gerber in 1973, the movie was produced by Lucasfilm, with George Lucas as the executive producer. Despite being one of the first Marvel characters to make the leap to the big screen, Howard the Duck failed critically and commercially upon its release.
By One of the film’s most notorious aspects is the use of a full-body Howard costume, worn by actor Ed Gale in most scenes, with a team of puppeteers controlling the duck’s facial expressions. The villain is played by Jeffrey Jones, who I think did an amazing job as a possessed human.
Lea Thompson ends up the cherry on top as the three end up on a wild journey. I loved this movie as a kid and had a chance to rewatch it this weekend. I have to say I enjoyed it now as much as I did back then. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea but for me this movie is one of the best memories of my childhood. Have a great week everyone.
