G.I. Joe Classified G.I.Joe

Is The Most Recent G.I. Joe Classified Retro Card Art AI Generated?

There has been a lot of discourse surrounding the most recent wave of the G.I. Joe Classified Retro figures shown at Toy Fair earlier this month. The art of this wave, which consists of characters Flint, Cover Girl and Cobra Tele-Viper has fans scratching their heads.

The original G.I. Joe lineup of characters depicted card art by legendary artist Hector Garrido. Additionally, during the run of the G.I. Joe Classified line of action figures, independent artists have had the privilege of having their art on the boxes of the action figures. However, the art of the current wave of G.I. Joe retro figures does not look to be, at minimum, the same quality as previous offerings, leaving many to speculate that it was created with AI.

Is Hasbro using AI for the card art to cut back on costs, therefore not raising the price point of the action figures and passing the expense on to the consumer? This is a question we here at Serpentor’s Lair would like to know the answer to.

As a point of opinion, we do not care for the art of this wave of figures whether it be from an artist or created by AI. We hope in the future Hasbro will return to using the art of Mr. Garrido, or commission independent artists for the package character representations.

Below we have closely examined the art for the Retro Tele-Viper figure. While there has been some speculation that there are extra fingers on the art which is a common tell of AI generated art, after close examination, we find that there are not actually extra fingers depicted.

We hope that Hasbro will reach out to the collector community soon with clarification on this.

As you can see here in the photo below we count four fingers on each hand in the card art.
