G.I.Dave’s Cartoon Realism: Silly or Gritty? “The Invaders”

“The Invaders” (Season 1, Episode 50) I seen Destro Design’s make a post and remind me about this one. Glad he did. This is definitely one of the better episodes.

This has been very refreshing for me. I watched all these as a kid, and even when watching them, sneered at the “sillyness” and lasers. Reading the comic I felt I was in a much more mature GIJOE world.
In fact, the comics are the minority, and it seems most collectors these days say they got into it from the toon. Rewatching some of these have really been great, and VERY surprising. I have a few personal favorites, and this was always one. As a kid, I was fascinated with Bigfoot, the Bermuda Triangle, UFOs, and any “mystery” where I had to think outside of the box. As a kid, I loved the idea of UFOs and aliens, but I never really, truly believed it until I had my own experience. One of the great things about being human, is not knowing everything. We always get to wonder at “what is”, and that could be said about everything these days. Im glad I grew up in the time I did…

“The Invaders”… I really remembered this for the flying saucers and the Oktober Guard debut. Strip away the purple alien masks and the human-cannonball insertion, and what’s left is a surprisingly coherent (for Sunbow) study in diversionary warfare, force concentration risks, and the friction of ad-hoc coalitions.

Opening Phase- Pursuit and Ambush in Restricted Terrain: SOLID ACTION.
The Joes open in a classic mobile pursuit across desert. Small element (five operators lead by a helmeted Duke on Silver Mirages) are out looking for HVTs. They come across an oasis and an Arabic man tells them he seen the HVTs they are looking for and points them in the direction. Now, I had to watch this again to make sure, but dusty literally says “Thank you Efendi, me and the Camel Jockey got a lot in common, he loves the desert as much as I do”. Yeah…it was the 80s ….

We do get to see a helmeted Duke use his binoculars. SOLID.

The Hunters take off, and Tomax and Xamot are found on Ferrets, and the Joes pursue.
The environment favors the pursuers initially—open ground, high mobility—until Cobra transforms a “prepared position”, into a full fledged Armored bunker, a rotating dune that reveals a fortified base with firepower and reinforcements. Almost at the same time, a Jeep busts over a hill, and it’s full of the Oktober guard! I LOVE the Oktober guard in the comic. This team is pretty decent for sunbow.

This is textbook reverse-ambush. The terrain feature is used as both concealment and surprise. Duke correctly breaks contact rather than press a fight against prepared defenses and superior numbers. Gung-Ho’s impulse to charge is classic small-unit aggression that would get people killed, but hey, MARINES. Duke’s decision to disengage and use terrain for cover is the correct call. The Oktober Guard’s arrival turns it into a three-way engagement. Their decision to fire OVER the Joes at Cobra is pure self-interest, not alliance—exactly how rival special units behave when the same target presents itself and no higher orders constrain them.
This fight, is really good. Duke calls to retreat, and his bike takes a hit, and he is stranded.
WONT LEAVE A BUDDY BEHIND, and snake eyes and the team ditch the bikes, and crawl up a defilade. They are seriously outnumbered, but for tier one operators this is the norm.

Surely they were going to get Shwacked, (And DONT call me Shirley) but then two massive UFOs appear, fly over the bunker, and blast it to smids. The fighting stops, and the UFOs land, the door of the UFO opens, and Tomax and Xamot are “force pulled?” Into the craft for some good old fashioned probing.

Gung Ho literally says “HO LEE..” and the screen cuts ..I totally LOLd..I wanted him to say “shit” SO bad..
a pretty cool looking purple Alien emerges, and this thing says in English, “Hear me humans! We’ve taken 2 specimens, and you will soon find your planet’s fate after we probe em’. Dusty, with balls of steel, says “hold it..where ya from?” And the Alien says “our world circles the star Sirius”. Ok…sounds legit.. Bro walks right back in the UFO like an Alien boss.

Confusingly, Gung ho says “colonial Sharp is gunna have our butts for coming up empty handed, and bring back a UFO story.” Now..cmon..you got your job, you seen what you seen, that should all be in your AAR. Personally I’d LOVE to go back to base with this story…lol.
Enter the Oktober guard. This team is VERY different than the comic Guard, but similar is some ways. There is immediately a dynamic between Gung Ho, and Horrorshow that really resonates legit with me. Sometimes these dynamics happen, dudes HATE each other from the first sight. I’ve seen it, we all have.
Gung Ho socks Horrorshow, and I really like how Duke actually wears his Top Kick pants and tells gung ho “AS YOU WERE!! GUNG HO, ATTTEN HUH!!!” And the marine falls in with a salute. I love that.

We meet Col Brekhov, he is not the grizzled veteran in the comics, but the character does the job.
This part of Duke is really weird.. Brekhov and Duke say “our mission didn’t included you .so let’s just pretend we didn’t see each other and walk away..”

Whaaaa? I don’t get it. You report what happened out there unless there are serious.. SERIOUS circumstances to warrant a LIE. This ain’t it. In fact, Duke is withholding information at this point, and could put the entire world at risk if this were an Alien invasion.
And this is how I would see first contact as well. I do not think Aliens are going to be these peaceful beings. We as humans have a great track record of sailing the seas and destroying another civilization…no reason to think aliens would not be drilling over our resources, or us as food or labor.

The scene switches to Col Sharp saying American and Russian airbases, tankers, Russian observatory, and part of the Alaskan pipeline. This sounds like the Aliens want cripple us, but also concentrating on American and Russian assets. We see the diplomats at the U.N. blaming each other..LEGIT.. Sharp tells Duke directly that he has orders from the president to drop everything and find the flying saucers. Duke says “I have a Plan…”

The Joes ask for a sub and the navy delivers. We see Cutter manning the periscope, and this is exactly how I see the U.S.S. Flagg being used. I don’t believe the Joe’s have an aircraft carrier. I say that when the mission calls for it, Keel Haul is delivered to a carrier group, and that carrier is then designated “U.S.S.Flagg, and task force GIJOE”. I like how they procure the sub…what I DON’T like is Duke’s plan. They use massive battleship size cannons, to shoot the Joe team into the Oktober guard base circus style with parachutes. Eyes rolling. Duke explains the Russian base has too much AA and that’s why the curious insertion..

Duke the Joes are apprehended, and a short scuffle ensues, and before you know it they are all buddies. Duke and Brekhov get a plan to split and mix forces and find the UFOs. Duke and his team taking north America, and Brekhov and his team searching Europe, while Snake eyes and Wong investigate Extensive Enterprises. Mission requirements force the Joes and ‘Guard into an alliance.

When the Oktober guard is alerted, they Grab AKs. Now THAT is a solid detail you can’t miss when you see the same cookie cutter rifles over and over.

While searching Horrorshow locks in on a transmission from the Alien Boss. He says ” I am transmitting from the moon, and if humanity does not submit, he will destroy san Francisco, and Vladivostok. Surrender unconditionally to me, or I will destroy all your cities.

And then there is the Milk carton.
The alien is shown on screen with a milk carton and a straw (y’know, school style?). You can see where this is going.
The world leaders take it seriously, and amass all of their military forces, to these 2 locations to defend against the alien threat.
Snake Eyes and Wong, use gliders to infiltrate the Extensive Enterprises building hoping to get info, and they sure do. Snake eyes looking cool as hell, but him and Wong fall through a trap door and into a cage. Tomax and Xamot, now in their suits, fresh from probing, are pissed about the infiltration, Taze Snake eyes and Wong, and bring them on board the UFO, that was parked on the roof? …then the plot is revealed as a double masked Zartan. He pulls off the alien mask, to show the Arabic man from the beginning, then pulls THAT mask off and BOOM Zartan.

So Zartan was in disguise on the ground in the beginning, told the Joe’s to head to that trap..now THAT is classic Zartan.

The rest of the Noks’ show up and they reveal the plan, to lure the world’s major military forces AWAY from the capitols, and then they will attack the White house, and Kremlin, as the goal is to seize the capitols and “military secrets of both nations..”

Snake eyes uses classic ninja magic and reflexes to save, and free himself in the same move, knocks out Zartan, and him and Wong commandeer the UFO, and immediately warn the others of the plan. Duke and Brekhov pivot, and fly to the white house and Kremlin.

They lose me here. Cobra is literally using airships disguised as UFOs, and they need military secrets?!? BAFFOONS!! As the master plan is revealed, you gotta step back and say this has been pretty good so far, but why military secrets? They have Destro tech, I would have rather just heard “to occupy the capitols..” but it is what it is.

Cobra’s core plan is the strongest element of the episode. Create a credible external threat (UFOs hitting both American and Soviet infrastructure), force both superpowers to concentrate conventional forces on the threatened cities (San Francisco and Vladivostok), then strike the now-lightly defended political centers with unconventional forces already prepositioned in civilian guise. This part of the story is based, caught me off guard, and I love the idea..just don’t see the need for the “military secrets” thing.

This is classic diversionary strategy. It mirrors historical examples where an opponent is fixed on one axis while the decisive effort hits another. By hitting both sides’ assets, Cobra manufactures a crisis that neither government can ignore without looking weak. The 24-hour ultimatum creates artificial time pressure that accelerates the misallocation of forces. Once the armies are committed to the coasts, the capitals become vulnerable soft targets. The use of unmarked vans and “tourist” cover for the assault force is low-tech, deniable, and realistic for a non-state actor trying to mass personnel without triggering early detection. We actually see this in real life.

The fatal flaw is operational security and OPSEC discipline. Broadcasting the ultimatum from a “moon” set that includes a clearly visible milk carton (and, depending on the cut, a human hand) is an intelligence failure of cartoon proportions. Any competent all-source analyst would flag terrestrial artifacts in an alleged extraterrestrial transmission within minutes. Snake Eyes’ later identification of that detail is pure pattern recognition—exactly the kind of small, incongruous detail that breaks elaborate deceptions in real intelligence work.

The deception collapses, both sides race to the real objectives. The White House and Kremlin defenses become hasty, combined-arms fights. Cobra’s assault mix (ASPs, Trubble Bubbles, ground troops in civilian vehicles) is pretty awesome to see on the move and Cobra being cohesive. Dukes team jumps out of the planes that have been searching for the UFOs, and start blasting full auto in freefall even before the pop chutes. Duke calls in reinforcements, but they have to hold for now, and it’s a decent little on screen skirmish.

A nice addition is when a cobra trooper hits the rail with a rocket launcher, and Gung ho falls down unconscious. Horrorshow sees Gung Ho is gunna get burned, and saves him. They may hate each other, but they DO respect each other enough to not let the man burn in a fire, and Horrorshow saves Gung Ho.

The prepositioned Cobra forces lose the advantage of surprise and are thwacked by superior air support and coordinated ground response when the reinforcements arrive, as Gung Ho and Horrorshow emerge from the fire.

Snake Eyes and Wong’s ability to seize and turn one of the fake saucers against Cobra Commander’s command platform is the decisive tactical action—capturing and employing the enemy’s own mobility asset. The episode correctly shows that once the strategic deception fails, Cobra’s tactical forces are not strong enough to hold against reinforced, motivated defenders. Snake eyes and Wong have a UFO dogfight over the White house, and Cobra Commader’s UFO takes a hit and splashes in the Potomac. He has a life vest I guess…he will be fine.

What it gets right:
Diversionary strategy and the danger of force concentration.
The difficulty of ad-hoc coalitions between ideological rivals.
The decisive role of small, incongruous intelligence details in collapsing deceptions.
Special operations preference for mobility, surprise, and rapid decision cycles over pure firepower.

What it stretches past realism into silly?
The speed of inter-team trust-building.
The complete absence of higher headquarters friction or political interference once the alliance forms and lying about field ops.
The logistical and signature management of operating two large “UFO” platforms without earlier detection.
The human-cannonball insertion method (entertaining, tactically absurd).

Overall, “The Invaders” is one of the cleaner tactical narratives in the Sunbow run. Cobra’s plan is sound operational art undone by poor OPSEC. The Joes and Oktober Guard demonstrate the classic special-operations response: rapid information sharing, mixed teams, and aggressive action against the real center of gravity once the deception is identified. The milk carton remains the single best illustration in the entire series of how small failures in deception tradecraft can unravel an otherwise sophisticated scheme. Although it’s rediculous, the milk carton is more of a symbol for kids to understand “if your gunna lie to Mom and dad, make sure you cover ALL the details!”

I really enjoyed watching this one again. The Alien threat was menacing until it wasn’t, and the beginning battle is one of the better fights, with joes using cover, and not leaving the team behind.

Silly or Gritty? I say BOTH on this one. This is a DAMN good episode, and the visuals of the Joe’s firing white parachuting down is still in my head. That’s was just fun sunbow action that I can’t ignore.
