Super Bowl Sunday
Back in 1920 there was a push to create a professional Football league that was Superior to all the others. The APFA was formed and in 1922 changed its name to the NFL. The next few decades would see great games, great controversy, and great changes. Very few leagues were able to compete against the NFL until the 1960’s AFL. The AFL maid a good run but the leagues decided to merge and just be the NFL, but they would play one championship game and call it the Super Bowl. Super Bowls I-IV were played before the official Merger and they were a split between the NFL and AFL. This would lead to the formation of 2 conferences the AFC and the NFC that would compete in the Super Bowl and that format remains today. In the 1920’s there also were no playoffs, the team with the best record at the end of the season won the championship. The playoffs progressed through the years into today’s format. The 70’S paved the way for Super Bowl Sunday. The 80’s and 90’s sky rocketed the NFL to one of the most popular sports in the world. Today people celebrate and watch the Super Bowl with their own traditions, but I bet there are lots of Pizza and wings, perhaps a Madden Bowl, and millions tuning in for commercials, halftime, pregame, oh yeah and the game.
I remember the first Super Bowl I saw, Bears vs Patriots. I’m not so sure that I ever watched much of the game, but you knew who Jim McMahon, The Fridge, Ditka, and yes we even knew there was a team named the Patriots. I remember a couple goal line stands from the Niners in the late 80’s, Montana to Rice might ring a bell. In 1991 I was washing dishes at the Elm Tree Inn in Keene, NY. I heard cheers a jeers from the bar. I had checked the score now and again, but when I went into the bar the Bills had just been stopped on third down. Scott Norwood came on to kick a potential Super Bowl winning 47 yard field goal, then the announcer belts out wide right, wide right and he hung his head in sorrow. From then there have been some blowouts, some nail bitters, amazing catches, amazing stops, games won or lost by inches. We have seen taunting and fights, and we have seen amazing stories of people who are humble to there fortune and people who have overcome great odds to make it in the NFL. I always enjoy watching the recap on Super Bowl games. Back in the 90’s there was lots of Tecmo Bowl played and then lots more Madden Bowls played. There were some backyard ice Bowls and plenty of partying over the years. All in all I have enjoyed the Super Bowl over the years.
