The Millennium Falcon

In 1977 an Empire was in it’s infancy. Star Wars has grown to an enormous empire today. Many characters and quotes have been a staple in the franchise, but one of the most famous ships in the movie is the Millennium Falcon. As Han so eloquently put it, it’s the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy. The Falcon first came onto the scene shortly after Luke and Ben made a deal to have them brought to Alderaan. On the way there they were sucked into the Death Star and as luck would have it became the escape vessel for the all important Princess Leia. Han perhaps had been many places in his life but probably wasn’t expecting to land on Hoth and suffer the freezing cold as the Rebels hid out.

Once again the Falcon was an escape vessel, and those famous words were spoken, I’ll get her out on the Falcon. From there many hours were spend of close encounters, bad repairs, and a little meddling from the Empire. Despite all the trouble the Falcon once again was able to out run, out maneuver and outsmart the Empire as she nearly avoided disaster after disaster. Although the prequel decided to leave the Falcon out except for one quick shot I saw in 2 or 3 that was a freighter but not necessarily the Millennium Falcon. Although the fans were sad to not see the Falcon in the Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, or Revenge of the Sith, I and I’m sure every other fan was very excited to see the trailer for the Force Awakens. Every fan will be overjoyed to see the Falcon fly again on the big screen after some 30 years.

As a kid I never had a Millennium Falcon play set. I had one of the 3 inch die cast ones, but was never able to get the play set. My first glimpse of the Falcon was in the 1990’s when I was hanging out with my younger brother and one of his friends and his friend had a bunch of Star Wars figures including the Falcon. I never got to play with that one though. Many years later I won an intense bidding war on EBay and got my first Falcon play set, the 1990’s version. A couple of years later I ended up with a bit of a shell of an original one that I found in a box of parts I got at the farmers market. Since then I bought the new light up one at Walmart and was able to get one of the big honkers from the farmers market as well. I believe it was the 2011 Falcon that was the large play set, that one is very cool. There are lots of cool features and the size just compliments the figures so well. Over the years there have been many different size and versions such as mini die cast and Happy Meal toys of the Millennium Falcon, if I ever hit to Lottery my wife is going to hate me because I’m building a life size Falcon to live in.

All in all, the Millennium Falcon is one of those signature vehicles that even the non Star Wars fan would be able to recognize. There are a few other ships that I can think of that are as popular, but I’m marking the Millennium Falcon as the #1 all time Space Ship. It is very recognizable and the amount of toys and play sets that have been made set it aside from all the other ships from Star Wars and any other Sci-Fi movies.
