What Will happen to ‘Robin’ in Batman vs Superman Movie?
It seems like more and more information is coming to light after the release of the epic trailer for ‘Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice‘ at last weeks SDCC. Warner today unleashed a monster, with the second trailer for the upcoming DC Comics cinematic universe movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice being screened for thousands of fans in Hall H at the annual San Diego Comic Con, and then hitting the Internet moments later. The reaction was swift and overwhelmingly positive, as the trailer gave us a much better look at this first cinematic teaming of Batman and Superman, the first big-screen portrayal of Wonder Woman, and much more. But besides the obvious bits that stand out, there were several smaller moments that reveal major events and plot points in this movie and the larger DCU on film. Among them was a major revelation that will create the most antagonistic relationship between Batman and his arch enemy, the Joker. Fans of the comic book will be well aware of what I’m talking about, but if you aren’t among the “initiated” then you should stop reading now, because there be BIG spoilers ahead!
In the comics, Batman’s first Robin is Dick Grayson, but eventually he grows up and leaves Batman. Batman then takes a second Robin under his wing, this one being Jason Todd. But Jason Todd is different, he has a lot of anger and tends to be reckless. Eventually, Jason — as Robin — confronts the Joker without Batman, and the results are tragic. The Joker kills Robin, beating him to death with a crowbar. Batman finds his sidekick and pulls him from a building that’s about to explode, but it’s too late to save the kid from the lethal beating administered by the Clown Prince of Crime.
Which brings us to Batman v Superman, and the new trailer revealed today. In the trailer, there are shots of Bruce Wayne in the Batcave, and we see him staring at a particular suit on display in the cave. Here is the suit…
Yep, that’s a Robin suit, with the Joker’s graffiti painted on it. In the comics, Batman keeps Jason’s Robin costume on display in the Batcave as a reminder of his personal failure to protect Jason or stop the Joker. It appears the film is taking a similar track. We don’t know if the Robin in question will be Jason Todd, but it looks obvious that the Joker took the life of a Robin, and Bruce keeps the suit in the Batcave.
Jared Leto is playing the Joker in this DC cinematic world, and will make his first appearance in 2016′s Suicide Squad… or will he? Might we see a flashback scene in Batman v Superman, showing the Joker’s brutal murder of Robin? Maybe, and if not, I wouldn’t be surprised if the scene appears in Suicide Squad instead.
