Variety reports that 12.9 million people watched the show live in that 8:30 p.m. ET slot. Although it couldn’t match the ratings juggernaut Big Bang Theory which preceeeded it, Supergirl retained 76% of the young adult demographics from that show, earning it the #2 spot in ratings overall for the evening.

58% of the 18-34 demographic were female for Supergirl’s debut, but the male/female mix was more even at 48% when looking at the overall 18-49 age range.

Comparing it with other new shows that have debuted this fall, Supergirl ranked #1 for adults 18-49. For the entire year, Supergirl was only outmatched by the series debuts for Fear The Walking Dead, Empire and Better Call Saul.

The 12.9m viewers Supergirl garnered puts it ahead of the debuts of fellow superhero TV shows, both DC and Marvel. The CW’s Arrow and The Flash earned 4.14m and 4.8m respectively, while Fox’s Gotham earned 8.28m. ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. came closest to Supergirl’s numbers when it debut with 12.12m viewers.
