Remembering Willie Mays Hayes: A Baseball Legend’s Journey Through History

Story by Mitchell Smith

Hello everybody today we look back at an extraordinary man Willie Mays Hayes. Born in 1931 in Alabama, Mays was an all around great athlete. Both of his parents were also great athletes, natural traits he may have inherited through the gene pool. Mays who grew up in a more troubled time in our history luckily had Jackie Robinson who broke the color barrier in major league baseball and paved the way for new talent to be a part of the league. Mays was highly sought after and eventually was signed by the New York Giants.

Mays had an instant impact winning the 1951 rookie of the year award. 3 years later Mays played a major roll in bringing the Giants a World Series championship in 1954, which ended up being the last championship before the team before they moved to San Francisco. Mays would play 23 seasons before retiring in 1973. Mays is still considered one of the all time greats in MLB history.

Mays who was 93 passed away from heart failure on June 18, 2024. Mays was beloved by the MLB community as well as other sports communities, family, friends, and fans alike. His legacy will forever be etched into time. RIP Mr Willie Mays.
