SIdeshow Collectibles ‘Snake Plissken’ Review with Serpentorslair Staffer Will Joines!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This figure took me a LONG time to get. I pre-ordered it in October of 2013, I did not get it until last month. That being siad there were a few issues with the figure, which I will talk about later in the review, that did not allow me to write this review until now. In my personal opinion it is a good figure, not great, but not quite what I was hoping for.

Ive been dabbling with different ways to rate teh figures in each review, and I believe that I will continue with doing sections, such as; Sculpt/ likeness, poseability/ playability, accessories, packaging and cost. Each of these sections will be rated on a scale of 1-5. 1 being awful and 5 being awesome. So without further ado, Snake Plissken.

The packaging is simple and straight forward, much like the character that is referenced. Its got little flair, but is straight to business. The front features the logo emblazoned with a rendition of Snake’s famous tattoo, while the rear of the box features a cropped portion of a paintng featuring the titular Snake looking tough. This is accompanied by all of the product and manufacturer details.
After removing the lid, one is met with an insert featuring the full painting that we only saw part of before. Needless to say, the art work is PERFECT! It nails Kurt Russell’s gruff appearance in the Escape From New York film. Seeing this picture, one would have to say that Snake Plissken “ain’t nothin to fuck with.”
Once the slip is removed, you are greeted with the figure! The packaging keeps them amply supported and many things come VERY bagged. I had already removed these when he first arrived, so that is why they are seen folded in the back of the bottom pack. It was a chore to open, but Im glad it was that way, the figure was very safe. Also the top and bottom packs nest one over the other, which is quite the surprise when removing. They do not often separate until you’ve lifted them out of the box…then plop! Join in the discussion after the JUMP!

Rating: Good solid packaging with little negative aspects.

The head sculpt is of top notch quality as is to be expected from the sideshow team. The details match up pretty well with the real life counterpart. Paint apps are nice, and the colors are very true to life, and not overly bright. The only fault is the gloss that the head still has. I find that steals from the paint application quality. The downside to these paint apps that really irks me…while it could also be due in part to the type of material used for the head, is that the colors of the body and the head..and hands for that matter do not match. They are paler in comparison. The images do not fully show the difference, but it is VERY noticeable.

The tattoo, is dead on to the original, albeit a tad smaller than I thought it would be.

Sculpt and such: Accurate but with some issues
3.5/5

Poseablility/ Playability

As it stands the side show male alpha bodies are HELLA poseable in most cases. The downside is that this figure is built slightly different than some of the others that I have seen and played with. The range of motion in the legs is great, and only hidered by the clothing, as things would be in real life. The torso itself has multiple segments making it bendable in multiple areas and very easy to position. The head is double ball jointed and has an incredibly wide range of motion. This however is slightly hindered by the sculpted hair.
The main issue comes from the arms. The shoulders are incredibly stiff, as are the elbows. They do not lift high enough to reach a perpendicular position. They come close, but do not reach all of the way. The elbows will NOT bend past 90 degrees because of the forearm sculpting. This make many poses impossible and to me that sucks! You just can not have a Snake Plissken figure that you cant position to be actively smoking, holding the cigarette to his mouth!
The playability is severely limited because of this, and the fragile hand joints. You have to pose this figure as if you were walking on egg shells. I recommend that you only pose it once and a while, and AVOID doing much more than displaying it.

ACCESSORIES:

Hand Sets

This is where the figure really shines. He comes with all of his film fun stuff! Except the fucking cassette! Although that is only a MINOR qualm of mine. The figure comes complete with;
Uzi
Uzi Silencer/ Scope combo
Uzi Holster
2 x Extra Uzi clips
Uzi Clip case
Revolver w/ scope
Revolver holster
Radio
Life Timer
Big red button bracelet
Presidential Tracker and pouch
Extra pouch
3 x Throwing stars
Belt
Leather Jacket
CIGARETTE

& 7 different hands.

These accessories all fit and pose well with the figure. The pouches snap peg closure is terribly hard to close, and one of mine even popped of the flap and had to be re glued. The belt also came unglued, but it was no big deal. Other negatives, involve the cuff stud on the Jacket which also popped off and needs to be reglued still. The sculpting on the accessories is GREAT. They are very accurate. The breach slide on the uzi works and the clips eject and can be swapped. The revolvers bullet housing does rotate as well. Additionally, the eagle wrist button opens up and displays nicely. The jacket fits very tightly, and does not leave any space around the wrists to put the bracelets on along with the jacket. Moving on to the radio; its antenna raises and lowers, and it display easily with the belt clip.
There is ample storage for all of the parts, and the throwing stars fit nicely in the thigh pockets on the pants.

Again, the cigarette is the BEST accessory!

“WHY CANT I GET YOU TO MY MOUTH!”

Accessories: 4/5

COST:

The cost of this figure was the sideshow base figure average of just shy $160. In that regard I am happy that is all I paid for this figure. However, I am disappointed that that is also what I had to pay for it. I was so excited before hand, yet the small issues with the figure really screwed that up for me to an extent. Dont get me wrong, this figure is VERY nice and looks great! However, I expect more than just looks when I shell out that kind of scratch. I really wish it had been a tad cheaper for this issues.

SO that being said
COST: 3/5

So that give this figure a total score of 17.5

With that sort of score I recommend that one only pursue this figure if they really love the character. It is not a must have for anyone else. Honestly even if you do want it, NECA does a nice 5 inch figure, but if you want the big guy this is your huckleberry.
