Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day has been around for about as long as anyone can remember, roots trace back the 400 AD and are associated with the Romans. Modern day Valentine’s mainly is aimed toward Women, but I think we all can remember exchanging cards in grad school. Valentine’s Day can be hectic or blissful for guys these days. You may be in a new relationship, in no relationship, or perhaps you are in a long time standing relationship. It can be real crazy trying to find the RIGHT gift for your companion. Then there are those men and women who might not be in a relationship at all and you may feel depressed because you have nobody. Then there are those who might find themselves in a long time relationship and the flowers fade away and the corny gifts are just dust collectors, but in the end there is more there then materials and gifts, there is love.

Now I’m not sure who believes in true love, destiny, roll the dice see where they land, but my story is quite a collaboration of events and changes that would lead me to my best friend today. The first major event that I can remember that lead to me meeting my wife happened on January 28th 1986. I was home sick with Asthma and flu. I remember it like yesterday because that was the day the Challenger blew up, I was watching it on TV. This would be the start for me of a plaguing year of Asthma and flu that caused me to miss a lot of school, the final outcome that year was I missed enough school where I had to repeat 3rd grade. Had I not failed I would have graduated a 2 year school before she had even started. Fast forward to 1994, I had no intensions of breaking my family history of not attending college, but my English teacher made me not only apply to various scholarships but also to various colleges. After several chats with various people in my small town population 500, I decided on a SUNY school. Now I made some good friends at school and my roommate who had pledged a fraternity convinced my to pledge the roughest toughest frat on campus. In January 1996 one of my friends introduced me to a girl in her sorority. After a couple months of dating we fell madly in love. We always said Jan 26th was the day me met, but we were not 100% sure and I wondered if there was some strange parallel between 1986 and 1996. So long story short we tied the knot in 2000, had kids in 2004 & 2008 and have been madly in love since 1996.

So here is my advise as a 15 year married vet, if you are married guys make sure you take note of your girl, not just on Feb 14th, but the other 364 days of the year, say I love you every day, for those single people don’t be afraid to ask, you might get rejected, but eventually you will find someone special for you, and last but not least, those who are struggling to see eye to eye, you may not be graced with love, destiny, or any of the things that come with Valentine’s, but keep an open mind because love my be lurking just around the next corner.
