He’s the best there is at what he does — especially when he’s in a foreign land.
“The Wolverine” arrived in theaters this past weekend, clawing its way to the top of the box-office. Hugh Jackman’s claw-popping return to the mutant who made him famous was met with a $55 million weekend domestically — about $30 million less than “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” made in its debut weekend, despite having much better reviews.
That sounds like a pretty bad wound on paper. Luckily, Logan fared much better overseas.
Internationally, “The Wolverine” clawed up $85.3 million in 100 countries this weekend, scoring big wins in Russia, France and the U.K., among other territories, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.
That puts “The Wolverine” at a worldwide total of $141.1 million after just one weekend, $20 million past the film’s reported $120 million production budget. And that’s all without the help of Japan, the setting for Fox’s superhero flick. “The Wolverine” doesn’t open there until September.
In other words, even if fans didn’t quite go berserk for “Wolverine” in the United States, the fast-healing mutant did well enough around the world to still come out on top in a big way.
