‘Tomb Raider’ Teaser Unveils ‘The Legend of Lara Croft’ Premiering This Fall

Netflix has finally revealed the release date for its animated series, The Legend of Lara Croft, with a new teaser showcasing the return of the iconic treasure hunter. Announced in 2021 alongside Skull Island, the series is part of Netflix’s efforts to adapt beloved video game franchises. Hayley Atwell will voice the adventurous Lara Croft, with Powerhouse Animation bringing her exploits to life. The series is set to premiere on October 10, marking over 25 years since Tomb Raider first appeared on PlayStation.
The story picks up after the events of the Survivor trilogy, which began with Crystal Dynamics’ 2013 reboot. Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft follows Lara as she embarks on daring solo adventures. However, she is drawn back home when a powerful Chinese artifact is stolen from Croft Manor. The thief’s personal connection to Lara adds intrigue, leading her on a globe-trotting quest through ancient temples to uncover ancient mysteries. Throughout her journey, Lara not only seeks answers but also undergoes a profound journey of self-discovery.
Lara Croft has been absent from screens since 2018, when Alicia Vikander portrayed her in Roar Uthaug’s film adaptation, which was inspired by the Survivor trilogy. Earlier, Angelina Jolie brought the character to life in the early 2000s films Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and its sequel. Hayley Atwell, known for her roles in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and as Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, lends her voice to Lara. She is joined by Allen Maldonado as Zip and Earl Baylon as Jonah Maiava, reprising his role from the games.
‘Tomb Raider’ Franchise Sees a Revival
The Legend of Lara Croft is just the beginning of a potential Tomb Raider resurgence, with multiple projects in development. Legendary Television is producing the animated series, with Tasha Huo from The Witcher: Blood Origin as executive producer and writer. Additionally, a live-action series has been ordered by Prime Video, with Crystal Dynamics producing and Phoebe Waller-Bridge writing. This show is expected to tie into a new game by Crystal Dynamics and a feature film continuing Lara’s cinematic adventures. Clearly, the world of this classic video game icon is poised for significant revival.
The Legend of Lara Croft debuts on Netflix on October 10.
