Where would we be without Robin Williams?
Robin Williams was born July 21, 1951 and left this word on August 11, 2014. Williams was born in Chicago and grew up there. He was very bright and played soccer and was class president. When he graduated high school in 1969 he was voted by classmates Funniest and most likely to NOT succeed. Williams started out college at Claremont, CA and earned a full scholarship to Juilliard in New York City. Williams started out as a stand up comedian in San Fran and LA back in the 70’s.
Then he went on to a remarkable career in acting and stand up. He got his first big break on Happy Days as the alien Mork, he was an instant hit and got his own TV show Mork and Mindy. In 1980 Williams brought to life one of the post popular and beloved cartoon characters when he played Popeye. I remember watching this as a kid and it was a great movie. I watched the cartoon Popeye as a kid and Williams really was Popeye. His next big film that he earned a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor, was when he played shock jock Adrian Cronauer in Good Morning Vietnam. Williams did most of his lines without a script, and nailed it. Williams took a desperate man to see his children and turned himself into an old Lady in Mrs. Doubtfire, this was an instant classic and a must see for all generations. Even though the Genie script in Aladdin was written for Robin Williams before he had even agreed to do the movie, Williams hesitated at first to get into animation, but once he agreed to play the part, he knocked it out of the park and there will never be another Genie as far as I’m concerned.
Other personal favorites for me are Good Will Hunting, Dead Poets Society, and Jumanji. Robin Williams was a very talented one of a kind actor and comedian, I was on vacation having dinner at one of my favorite restaurants the Milltop Tavern in historic downtown St Augustine Florida when I got the news, my wife and I both couldn’t believe it. Williams has touched millions with his work and his memory will live on well beyond our lifetime.
