DA BEARS

1985 proved to be one of the best years for the Chicago Bears who were formed in 1919. Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphin’s 38-24 win was the only loss of the season as the Bears went 15-1 and they went on to roll through the playoffs, beating the New York Giants 21-0, the L.A. Rams 24-0, and the New England Patriots 46-10 to claim the championship in Super Bowl XX. The Bears had one of the all time greatest running backs with Walter Payton, Jim McMahon, was Quarterback, William “Refrigerator” Perry was top rookie defensive lineman, and Mike Ditka was the head coach.

Even though the Bears dominated the season and won the Super Bowl I think most people remember the popularity of the team in mainstream American culture. They changed the face of the NFL with “The Super Bowl Shuffle.” McMahon was the hot shot slinger and the Fridge well he became a G.I. Joe. The Saturday Night Live crew shot the Bears to another level when Bill Swerski and his Superfans said Da Bears.

The 1991 skit that started it all brought back Da Bears and Ditka into the spot light, and has remained a popular skit over the years. Although it has been since 1986 that the Bears have stood on top, they have had many successful seasons, and if nothing else Bill Swerski and his Superfans will keep the stadium seats filled at Soldier Field.
