Adam Wingard Teases Thundercats Live-Action Movie Progress and Influences

Even though the Thundercats live-action movie remains a tantalizing prospect for fans, director Adam Wingard has hinted at its potential realization. In a recent interview during the press tour for his latest film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Wingard provided insight into the current status of the project.
Speaking with Collider’s Editor-in-Chief Steve Weintraub, Wingard expressed that Thundercats “could be” his next project. He disclosed that they are actively working on a draft, emphasizing his excitement about the progress: “We’re actively working on a draft right now, and it’s cruising forward. It’s super awesome. I’m really excited about it.” Wingard also revealed discussions with screenwriter Simon Barrett, suggesting substantial development.
Addressing the tone of the adaptation, Wingard acknowledged the need for a balance between seriousness and fun, drawing inspiration from the original series’ blend of danger and entertainment: “You gotta take it seriously…any good adaptation these days is you’ve got to stay as true to the source material as possible.”
In a surprising revelation, Wingard connected Thundercats to his current project, Godzilla x Kong, highlighting visual inspirations from the iconic animated series. He cited specific shots in Godzilla x Kong that pay homage to Thundercats, emphasizing the influence of ’80s cartoons on his filmmaking.
