‘Avengers 2’: with Scarlet Witch And Quick Silver?

In a recent interview it seems as if Joss Whedon has all but confirmed Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver for Avengers 2. As many die hard Avengers fans know, both of these characters are essential to the Avengers Universe. I am sure the fan base will be excited if this comes to fruition. Check out more on it below and share your thoughts after the JUMP!

Joss Whedon dropped a pretty big bombshell to Yahoo! Movies at the “Iron Man 3” premiere (check out this MTV slideshow of photos from the blockbuster red carpet event). I guess when you’re as high up as Joss Whedon, you get to drop all the bombshells you want. Who will stop you?! This particular bombshell involves the addition of two superheroes to “Avengers 2,” two superheroes that are, quite frankly, unexpected.

“I’ve got these two characters, two of my favorite characters from the comic books,” Joss reveals, “a brother/sister act. They’re in the movie, that’s exciting.”

The most famous brother/sister act in the Marvel Universe is, without a doubt, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch. Both are long-term Avengers, with the Scarlet Witch perhaps being the leading lady of the team. But here’s why their apparent, guaranteed involvement is so surprising: they’re mutants.

Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are twin mutants who first appeared in 1964’s “X-Men” #4. They were initially part of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants before they both joined the Avengers in 1965, alongside fellow new recruit Hawkeye. They’re both also, and here’s the kicker, the children of Magneto. So they’re Magneto’s mutant children, all things that would point to the characters being owned by Fox, the studio who has all of the X-Men’s film rights. But not so fast, saysMarvel Studios President Kevin Feige. Feige has said on a number of occasions that the film rights for Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver specifically are a little more complicated. It appears that whichever studio gets to them first gets them, in the most high-profile case of “dibs” in recent memory.

And when it comes to famous Marvel Comics brother/sister acts, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are the only two that even have ties to the Avengers (and those ties are mighty strong). Every other brother/sister act are flat-out mutants and predominantly X-Men. Cannonball and Husk, Aurora and Northstar, Magik and Colossus, Captain Britain and Psylocke, Cable and Rachel Grey… they’re all X-Men. The only other prominent siblings are the Fantastic Four’s Invisible Woman and Human Torch, who are also owned by Fox. Unless Joss Whedon has reimagined Captain Marvel and Wonder Man as siblings, he’s most certainly talking about Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.

The entire interview is definitely worth your time, even if it is cringe-inducing to hear a reporter call him “Josh” towards the end.

Whedon also talked about the progress his script for “Avengers 2” has made, revealing that he’s progressing quite nicely.

“I have actually finished a draft, we’re in a very good place. It’s going really well. Eventually somebody will explain to me that it’s not. But I’ve been writing, meeting with actors, and we’re starting to storyboard and all the preliminary processes. This is the part where it’s all still fun.”

Whedon even had high praise for “Iron Man 3,” even if the film’s high quality is raising the bar quite high.

“And by the way, Shane [Black is] not helping! ‘Iron Man 3’ not helping! I see this and say, ‘Aw, man, he really got it right!’ The pressure continues!”
