Since X-Men: Days of Future Past hit the reset button on the entire X-Men movie universe, all of the new movies are going to have the opportunity to do whatever the heck they want. This gives director Bryan Singer and the other creative minds behind X-Men: Apocalypse the unique opportunity to recast characters who were botched the first time around and give them a second chance on the big screen. And few characters deserve a second chance as much as Warren “Angel” Worthington, who has been confirmed as part of Apocalypse’s superhero ensemble.

The news came directly from Singer via his Instagram account (which is the trendy way of unveiling movie news these days) and while it’s not an official announcement, it might as well be. The caption simply reads “some production art,” but the image features the winged Angel imprisoned in a tall, imposing cage while an audience of spectators looks on. Man, being a mutant never stops sucking, huh?

Angel previously appeared in the not-as-bad-as-you-remember (but still wholly forgettable) X-Men: The Last Stand, where he was played by Ben Foster. He was one of a dozen characters shoehorned into an already overstuffed screenplay and fell through the cracks of the story. You know your movie has a problem when the flying superhero with a massive wingspan fails to leave an impression. It doesn’t help that Foster never got a chance to reprise the role in a future film.

Singer will certainly recast the part (only Hugh Jackman gets to stick around in these movies) and we will probably hear a name sooner rather than later (If the rumors are to be believed, Ben Hardy, who’s supposedly landed an unnamed role “significant to the X-Men universe,” might already have it). After all, the comic book version of Angel has a, let’s say, unique history with the villainous Apocalypse and Singer is surely going to capitalize on that in a big way. That art may not tell us much about Angel’s role in the story, but ask your friendly neighborhood comic-book nerd if you don’t mind spoilers. This character is in for a very strange ride.

X-Men: Apocalypse will begin filming soon for a May 27, 2016 release date.
