Chloe Bennet and Clark Gregg Talk ‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Season 3!

The newly limb-light S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) may be out his physical hand — lost after a run in with a Terrigen Crystal — but he can always turn to his metaphorical right-hand Daisy “Skye” Johnson (Chloe Bennet), especially in his bid to put together a superpowered division of the peacekeeping agency in Season Three of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

After another well-received tour of duty promoting the upcoming season before the fans during a Ballroom 20 presentation at Comic-Con International in San Diego, Clark Gregg and Chloe Bennet joined members of the press, including CBR News, to chat a tad deeper on what’s up ahead, specifically with the show’s plan to introduce a Marvel Cinematic Universe incarnation of the Secret Warriors — in the comics, young, powered-up of S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives who are ultimately led by Bennet’s character Daisy “Quake” Johnson.

The actors hinted at the increasing presence of the Inhumans in the MCU, Skye’s growing control over her seismic powers and leadership potential and the one thing Bennet saw on set last season that still has her cringing.

What can you tell us about Project Caterpillar?

Clark Gregg: What can I tell you? I’ll be able to tell you more in about a week when I get a script. I can tell you that it’s clear that it’s Secret Warriors. Oh, God, it’s covert ops! And the thing that’s always true of our show is — I’m familiar with “Secret Warriors” in the comics, but as iterated on our show and in the TV and cinematic world, it’s a different thing. It’s new and involves some people — we’re doing a version of it on “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” so that means that we’re going to try to gather people like Skye on a very, very top secret team. So I have a feeling that once again, Coulson will be wrangling some very special people. And that can really go wrong, and sometimes it can go really right.

You’ve talked about the father/daughter dynamic between the characters —

Gregg: I think they date this year.

Gregg: Oh, it was just a joke. You don’t have to do the “Gag me” face.

Bennet: I’m still like reacting to seeing you and Ming pretend to make out in the elevator in the bloopers clip. It was just like “Mom! Dad!”

Gregg: We’re not your actual parents.

Bennet: I know. But it was weird.

Gregg: That’s all right. How do you think I feel when I see you make out with Ward?

Bennet: I feel that way too.

Gregg: He’s a bad boy. Don’t bring him home.

How do you feel the end of Season Two will affect that dynamic?

Gregg: I mean, there was a hell of a lot of challenges to that relationship last year. And there was ways that I don’t think Coulson took care of her as well as he could have, and he feels responsible for her being turned into an Inhuman. And yet they came out of it closer than ever, was my read on it. So I think she’s kind of his right hand, so to speak. He doesn’t have a left one.

You got to tackle Inhumans on the show years before the movies- –

Gregg: Yeah!

Bennet: We did!

How did you react, and what kind of pressure do you feel knowing that it’s going to be a big movie property too?

Bennet: I don’t really feel pressure. I mean, I think we’re in really good hands because it literally has nothing to do with — I mean, all the genius behind the show is Maurissa [Tancharoen] and Jed [Whedon] and Jeff [Bell], and I trust them. And I think it’s in really good hands. And Marvel is, obviously, very involved as well, so I’m just excited to see what happens.

Gregg: I was excited, there was an announcement today that Lash, this very cool character from the Inhumans is coming. I was excited because — and I’ve said this before — the Inhumans are cool because they’re people who evolve differently. And suddenly, there’s a new version of us in a different form than ours. And some people think that a new version of us or some way of evolving differently, is something that needs to be exterminated and other people think that it’s an exciting new direction in who we are. It’s really topical.

Bennet: That sounds like “Civil War.”

Gregg: It does sound like “Civil War.” It sounds like the headlines, really.

Chloe, are you looking forward to playing a more seasoned version of Skye with her powers more under her control and her capable of really using them effectively in a fight?

Bennet: Yeah. Absolutely. I was thinking about that in the car ride and thinking about the growth that Skye has — how far she’s come since the first episode. I feel like Chloe’s still at the first episode, but Skye has evolved so much. So I’m actually a little nervous to play someone who’s so confident in her abilities, so it’s going to be a challenge. But I’m excited.

Does she become a leader, in terms of the Secret Warriors?

Gregg: We would be lying if we said we knew that. Certainly, she is in the comics. At some point, later down the road, Skye becomes the leader of the Secret Warriors. I don’t know if that’s where we’re going.

“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is scheduled to return for season three Sept. 22 on ABC.
