By Rufus Adams

This week on 10 Questions we have the founder of CAF: 101 (Custom Action Figures 101), Rob Panick, AKA General Panick, answering ten questions. Rob is 40 years young and a South Georgia native. He is engaged to his fiancée Rebecca and has two active boys who also he shares his love for toys with. He also has a daughter in Costa Rica, where he lived for four years and played bass in reggae bands and painted. Rob and Rebecca own Galactic Plastics (http://www.galacticplastics.net), where they sell various action figures, custom waterslide decals and Rob makes and sells custom action figures.

CAF:101 – First off, how long have you been customizing and what got you started?

ROB PANICK: I’ve been customizing for a little over a year and a half. I had gotten back into collecting Star Wars figures, and was lying in bed looking through eBay. I saw a custom clone trooper and showed it to my fiancée. I told her “Hell, I could probably do this!” The next day I proceeded to make a mess of a POTF2 Stormtrooper, but I caught the bug and was hooked! I started joining groups and searching out advice from other customizers, but was unpleasantly surprised with some of the responses I got, ranging from “I had to figure it out, so you figure it out” to “go watch YouTube videos for a few months and then try it” to “I make money from my customs, so giving away my technique is like giving away my money”.
So I wound up forming the Custom Action Figures: Tips, Tricks & Trade Facebook group. I knew there were other folks who wanted to learn how to customize and wanted to make a place we could all learn together. Now we’re close to 2000 members, and I’ve been amazed how much I’ve learned! A few months ago I got together with Adam Jared to make CAF: 101, and I’ve been overwhelmed at the response it’s been getting. It feels good to have made some places for folks to learn how to do something I love. I’ve definitely come a long way since that first Sharpie painted Stormtrooper!

CAF:101 – What’s your favorite figures to customize?
RP: My two main favorites as a kid were Star Wars and G.I. Joe, and those are definitely my favorites today. I love the characters from the Star Wars universe. I really like modern Joe figures for the articulation and the nearly limitless possibilities of original characters that can be made to fit into the “Joeverse”. I really dig making original characters and reimagining “crossover” figures.

CAF:101 – What’s your workspace like?
RP: It has grown into a dedicated room, lol. I’ve got a workbench that wraps around two walls with an area for building, a paint booth for my airbrush, shelves for fodder and figures and pegboard on the walls for carded figures and my Darth Vader collection. A good description is “organized chaos”.

CAF:101 – What paints and brushes do you use?
RP: I use a variety of paints; The Army Painter WARPAINTS, Acrylicos Vallejo, Reaper Master Series, Testors Model Masters, and even some cheapo craft paints. I use a Master Airbrush and a Testors Aztek A470L airbrush with a Master compressor. I use brushes from The Army Painter, Reaper, Flex-I-File, and quite a few WalMart cheapo brushes.

CAF:101 – If you could give advice to someone who is brand new to customizing, what would it be?
RP: Don’t be afraid to try new things, don’t be afraid to ask questions, and practice, practice, practice!

CAF:101 – Give us your best “secret trick” you use when customizing.
Prep your joints. Once you’ve got them moving good without rubbing, prime them, paint them, and then put a thin layer of super glue over the top of them to keep your paint from rubbing.

CAF:101 – What other things are you into besides customizing?
RP: Hanging out with my family. We have two little boys, one 2 and one 3, so I get to be a kid again playing with them and introducing them to all of the cool stuff I loved as a kids. I play bass guitar, though I don’t have a whole lot of time to lately, and I love gardening. I grow some awesome heirloom tomatoes and hot peppers every year.

And now for three questions from the Random Question Generator:

CAF:101- Would you rather be rich or famous?
RP: Rich. I could happily slide away into obscurity with a few million in the bank.

CAF:101 – What song makes you want to dance?
RP – HA! I love a lot of different kinds of music, from metal to blues to classic country to classic rock, but I have a “guilty pleasure”. I love Katy Perry’s “Firework”. It’s my jam! Also, pretty much any Reggae tune will get me dancing. How can you listen to Electric Avenue or Jammin’ and not get up and dance?

CAF:101 – Who is the greatest singer who is no longer living?
RP – Bob Marley, hands down. Such powerful songs. When he sang about struggle, he meant it. When he sang about love, he meant it. I named my youngest son Robert Marley Panick in his honor.
