CUSTOM ACTION FIGURES: 101 – “An Intro to Customizing”
By: Rob Panick a.k.a. General Panick

I’d like to welcome you all to Custom Action Figures: 101, a place that hopefully we can all gather and learn together about the art of customizing action figures. Many of you may know me from my Facebook group, Custom Action Figures: Tips, Tricks & Trade. As with my group, I want this to be resource for folks who want to learn to customize figures. Serpentor’s Lair was one of the very first places I found when I started researching custom figures. It’s an honor to be able to share what I’ve learned along the way (and even better, learn more) here at the Lair!

One of the most important things I’ve learned is to find the folks that are making awesome figures and ask them questions. I’ll be doing just that in interviews here on Custom Action Figures: 101. I’ll also be doing some video tutorials to demonstrate some of the steps I take when making a custom. Hopefully with the help of the members of Serpentor’s Lair that own figures from other customizers we can do some figure reviews as well! Most of all though I’m excited to get more knowledge and insight into this hobby we all love.

From Marvel to Transformers, Anakin to Zartan, 3 ¾” to 32”, there are thousands of action figures out there to customize. There’s a whole world of knowledge out there about customizing action figures. I want us to explore as much of that world together as possible. Hopefully even the most experienced customizers among us will be able to learn something here.

As the admin of an action figure customizing group on Facebook, I see a lot of questions people ask about customizing. I want to be able to share the answers to some of the common questions I see here outside of Facebook. And with any good questions, sometimes there can be different takes and techniques concerning the answers. Some things will work great for someone else, but not for you. I want to get answers from guys and gals who are putting out kick ass action figures time and time again.

I’ll also be doing reviews of different products that work well for action figure customizing. All products are not the same, and there are some things, such as types of paint on different plastics, that are a straight up nogo! Hopefully I can help new customizers find the right products to use and save time, money, and not destroy their valuable figures.

Again, thank you for joining me here at Custom Action Figures: 101! I’m really looking forward to all of the great things we are going to learn together! I want to say a big thanks to my friend Adam, a.k.a. Capt. Grid Iron for having me here. This forum is one of the most awesome gatherings of action figure customizers on the internet, and hopefully we can bring more into the fold and make this column a melting pot of customizing knowledge! May the Force be with us as the customizing Jedi come together!
