David Prowse: The Man Behind Darth Vader and His Lasting Legacy

Story by Mitchell Smith

David Prowse was born in 1935 in England. Prowse is best known for being the actor who played Darth Vader in the original trilogy, but we never heard his voice or saw his face. Prowse who stood 6’6” was a body builder and helped create one of the most iconic villains of our time. Prowse did have many other rolls such as the Creation in “Frankenstein” and Julian from “A Clockwork Orange”.

Prowse took on weightlifting in his younger days and was able to deadlift 784 lbs. Prowse who auditioned for Superman ended up being a trainer for Christopher Reeves who won the roll. Prowse was also offered the Roll of Conan the Barbarian but in the end went to Arnold Schwarzenegger. Sadly Prowse and Lucas had a falling out and Prowse who had done a great job creating Darth Vader was not invited to many of the reunions.

Overall Prowse had a nice career and also opened several gyms. Prowse who passed away in 2020, left his mark on the world and will be remembered greatly for helping to create Darth Vader. Have a great week everybody.
