‘Deadpool’ Screenwriters Fighting ‘Uphill Battle’

Deadpool fans are still hanging in limbo thanks to Fox Pictures, and it doesn’t look like the needle has moved on their willingness to make, what for most of us would be an epic movie. Get the latest on what is going on with the Deadpool Movie below, and share your thoughts after the JUMP.

The folks over at Collider had a nice chat with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the duo behind the finished “Deadpool” screenplay that’s currently in limbo over at Fox. The ‘Zombieland’ writers say that “Deadpool” is their personal favorite of all the scripts they’ve written. The interview lays out a lot of facts about the project that are reassuring (it has mind-blowing test footage, Ryan Reynolds is still on board, it could be made for $50 million, it’s a hard R and tonally nails how Deadpool should be on the big screen), which makes it even more disappointing that Fox is hesitant to pull the trigger.

Reese has nothing but great things to say about director Tim Miller. “We have a phenomenal director in Tim Miller, who did about a 3-minute test for Fox, and Ryan came in to do the mo-cap for it and the voice. And it’s like the greatest three minutes ever. I look at the three minutes and I’m like, ‘That’s the movie, and it has to get made.’ I think the biggest hurdle right now is convincing the-powers-that-be that it’s okay to have a hard-R rated movie within the Marvel Universe.”

Reynolds himself went into detail about the script recently, thus confirming that he is still very much on-board to reprise the role of the Merc With a Mouth.

It’s surprising that Fox is so hesitant about launching an R-Rated comic book film considering the success Universal had with the R-Rated “Kick-Ass” (and hopes to repeat with the R-Rated “Kick-Ass 2”). Hopefully with creative talent this passionate behind the scenes, “Deadpool” can make its way into theaters.
