The POP-EXPOSE

February Countdown: #4 – “Splash” Makes Waves as One of the Most Romantic Films of the 1980s!

Directed by Ron Howard, “Splash” is a fantasy romantic comedy that tells the story of Allen Bauer (Tom Hanks), a New Yorker who falls in love with a mysterious and beautiful woman, Madison (Daryl Hannah)—only to discover she’s actually a mermaid! This unique love story blends humor, fantasy, and heartfelt emotion, making it one of the most beloved romantic films of the decade.

Our February countdown of the top five romantic movies of the 1980s continues! At #5, we highlighted Pretty in Pink, a heartfelt coming-of-age romance starring Molly Ringwald that showcased the struggles of love across social classes. Now, swimming up to the #4 spot is a film that brings romance to new depths—1984’s “Splash”!

A Star-Making Film

While Tom Hanks had gained recognition from the TV series “Bosom Buddies,” “Splash” was his first major leading role in a feature film. His charming, everyman performance launched him into movie stardom, leading to a career filled with iconic films.

Daryl Hannah, fresh off roles in “Blade Runner” and “The Fury,” brought an ethereal and innocent quality to Madison, making her one of the most memorable mermaids in cinematic history. She even refused to use a stunt double for the underwater scenes and trained extensively to swim with a monofin.

The film also starred John Candy as Allen’s hilarious older brother, Freddie, whose comedic timing added an extra layer of charm. The legendary Eugene Levy played Dr. Walter Kornbluth, the eccentric scientist determined to expose Madison’s secret.

Behind-the-Scenes Tidbits You Might Not Know

  • The original script was much darker! The movie was initially conceived as a horror film where the mermaid’s secret was far more sinister. Fortunately, the tone was shifted to a romantic comedy.
  • Madison’s name became popular because of this movie! Before “Splash,” Madison was rarely used as a first name. After the film’s release, it skyrocketed in popularity for baby girls.
  • Ron Howard wasn’t the first choice to direct. The film was originally going to be helmed by Brian Grazer (who stayed on as a producer).
  • The mermaid tail was fully functional! Special effects designers created a realistic, swimmable tail for Daryl Hannah, which allowed her to move through the water with natural grace.

Why “Splash” Still Holds Up

Like “Pretty in Pink,” “Splash” explores the idea of love overcoming obstacles—this time, a truly impossible one. While Andie (Molly Ringwald) had to navigate class differences in “Pretty in Pink,” Allen and Madison had to figure out how to make a human-mermaid romance work!

With its blend of fantasy, comedy, and heart, “Splash” remains a nostalgic favorite and an essential 80s romantic film. Stay tuned as we reveal #3 in our countdown ON FRIDAY!
