Get the Skinny on “Ready Player One”!

Ready Player One is by far one of the best movies I have seen in a great while. Spielberg is a master storyteller and Zak Penn is right up there with him. Of course all they did was adapt a book, but, they created a great movie.

Full disclosure I have not read the book.

Wade Watts, this is the first of many great Easter eggs. The entire movie is an Easter Egg. If you were born in the seventies and were a kid or teen in the eighties this movie is going to hit you hard in the nostalgia department. Wade Watts, Bruce Banner, Peter Parker, Reed Richards, Sue Storm, do you notice the similarity here? Stan Lee in order to remember his characters, used the same letter for the first and last name. Nice little touch for Marvel fans. Not just Marvel, but Star Wars, DC, and many many more.
It is quite a ride.

The movie is many things, it is a hero’s journey, a romance, a mystery, nostalgic, action, beautiful CGI (you gotta see this in 3D) and of course a quest.  It’s gonna hit you in the nerd guts pretty hard, fair warning here.
A movie is only as good as its villain. Fair enough statement. Ben Mendelsohn, Hanna John-Kamen and T.J. Miller all are consummate. Miller is quite the character as I-ROK. Sorrento is one greedy person and he wants to own the Oasis at any cost. The IOI hires thousands of people to enter the Oasis to solve the puzzles and win the games. Winner gets the Oasis.

The Oasis was created by James Halliday and Halliday plants several clues and life lessons in the hopes that someone worthy enough will inherit the ownership of the Oasis. Think chocolate factory.
James Halliday is like most nerds/geeks who grew up in those years, myself included. His life is something I could really identify with. Not exactly sure what that says about myself but I digress. Halliday’s story is the story within the story and it drives the pace and action. The transitions from real world to the Oasis will surprise you and keep you on the edge of your seat. The characters are great, the romantic aspects will make you swoon, the nostalgia and surprise appearances will make you smile, and the deeper story may make you cry.

I do wonder which intellectual properties are now kicking themselves if they told Amblin entertainment no, they did not want to be in the movie. That Oasis, is the Star Trek holodeck stretched to its limit. If you loved it as a kid it is probably in there somewhere.

Oh and that soundtrack? Eighties ear candy

But that’s enough, you got a taste, now go out to eat. A gourmet meal of storytelling awaits. Did you enjoy ‘Ready Player One’? Sound off with your thoughts AFTER THE JUMP!
