Hugh Jackman already has an idea as to who should succeed him for the role of the Adamantium-clad Wolverine in future X-Men films — and that choice may surprise you.

It’s hard to imagine anyone else in the role of the Wolverine, but Jackman — who’s already said he wouldn’t play the beloved mutant forever and admitted it took him nearly 10 years to come to grips with the ferocious Canadian mutant — has already suggested a certain someone who could succeed him in the role at some point in the future.

So who is Jackman’s chosen one? Budding action star Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe, White House Down). Yep, you read that right. Nothing against the actor, au contraire. According to Press Association, Jackman said:

“I don’t know who could play him. Channing Tatum could probably play him.”

However, James McAvoy, who plays a young Professor Charles Xavier in X-Men: Days of Future Past, totally disagrees, noting: “Nobody could step into your shoes. They’ve got to retire the character when you finish. When you’re done with it, they retire the character.”

Hugh Jackman revealed that he still loves to play the character, even after all this time (the first X-Men flick came out 14 years ago, back in 2000):

“I’ve got to admit, when I took on the role, I was 30. But I think I needed to be 40 before I really got it,” he said. “Now I feel like, ‘This guy’s 200 (years old)’. I’m enjoying it more now than I ever have, that’s for sure. But they won’t retire it though, I can tell you that right now. 100 per cent.”
Jackman’s certainly not done with the character yet. After Days of Future Past, Logan gets to claw his way back again into a sequel to last year’s The Wolverine, directed by James Mangold.

How do you like Hugh Jackman’s pick for the next Wolverine?

X-Men: Days of Future Past is slated to be released into theatres on May 23.
