Marvel Announces Vision Series for 2026 Starring Paul Bettany, with Terry Matalas as Showrunner

Marvel has announced an exciting new Disney+ series centered around Vision, set to premiere in 2026. Paul Bettany will reprise his role as Vision, with Terry Matalas, known for his work on “Star Trek: Picard,” taking on the role of showrunner.

Vision, the beloved synthezoid, met his demise in 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War” but was brought back in 2021’s “WandaVision.” He appeared twice: first as a magical creation by Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), and then as a reassembled android with no memory of his past. The finale of “WandaVision” saw a dramatic confrontation between these two versions of Vision, culminating in the restoration of the rebuilt Vision’s memories before Wanda’s Vision faded away. The upcoming series will explore the journey of this memory-restored Vision as he navigates his new existence.

Terry Matalas was chosen to helm the new Vision series after impressing Marvel with his work on “Star Trek: Picard” Season 3, which successfully reunited the cast of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and earned him a Writers Guild of America award nomination for the series finale. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, a dedicated “Star Trek” fan, has shown his support for Matalas, even appearing with him on the “Star Trek” podcast “Inglorious Treksperts.”

Previously, a Vision series was being developed by “WandaVision” creator Jac Schaeffer, who shifted her focus to another spinoff, “Agatha: All Along,” starring Kathryn Hahn, set to debut in September.

With Matalas’s involvement, this marks Marvel’s first new live-action series in almost two years. The company is moving towards a more traditional television production model, with longer development periods and showrunners overseeing entire projects. Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s head of streaming, television, and animation, explained that since 2022, Marvel has adopted this approach, scaling back its live-action TV output to about two shows per year.

Terry Matalas’s previous work includes creating and running the Syfy series “12 Monkeys,” as well as executive producing and showrunning Season 4 of CBS’s “MacGyver.” His writing credits also include “Nightflyers,” “Nikita,” “Terra Nova,” and “Star Trek: Enterprise.” Additionally, Matalas has a unique hobby of restoring “Back to the Future” DeLoreans, which have featured on “Jay Leno’s Garage,” Super Bowl commercials, and the Academy Awards.
