The 1990s were an interesting time for G.I. Joe action figures. With bold colors, unique accessories, and some wild gimmicks, the decade delivered some truly unforgettable characters. Today, I’m counting down my top 5 favorite G.I. Joe figures from the 90s. Let’s see if your favorites made the list!

5 – Talking Battle Commanders Overkill (1992)

Overkill was the ultimate battlefield upgrade for Cobra’s B.A.T. (Battle Android Troopers). This version of Overkill came as part of the Talking Battle Commanders line, meaning he had a backpack that spouted battle phrases at the press of a button. His cybernetic design, menacing opening chest plate with guns inside, and signature claw arm made him stand out in any Cobra army. While the talking feature was a fun gimmick, the figure itself had an intimidating presence that made him a worthy adversary for the Joes.

4 – 1994 Battle Corps Shipwreck

Shipwreck is a fan-favorite character, but his 1994 Battle Corps version took him in a drastically different direction. Gone was the classic sailor look, replaced by the grey frogman suit, tactical gear, and an arsenal of weapons. While purists may prefer his vintage look, I always appreciated the way this version gave him a more Navy Seal appearance. The grey color scheme might not scream “stealth,” but it certainly gave him a unique look that stood out on the battlefield.

3 – Laser Viper (1990)

When it comes to Cobra troopers, the Laser Viper is easily one of the most visually striking. Armed with a massive backpack-mounted laser system and a sleek blue and grey color scheme, this figure looked like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. The idea of Cobra deploying specialized laser troopers always fascinated me as a kid, and Laser Viper was one of those figures that made battles feel futuristic and exciting.

2 – Night Creeper (1990)

Cobra’s Night Creepers were elite ninja mercenaries, and their 1990 figure made them look as deadly as their backstory suggested. With a sleek purple and maroon outfit and a terrifying face mask, these figures were perfect for sneak attacks on unsuspecting Joes. The Night Creepers also had some of the best weapons in the 90s lineup, including a crossbow and a curved sword. Their mysterious nature and awesome design cemented them as one of my all-time favorites.

1 – Captain Grid-Iron (1990)

This might be a controversial pick, but I stand by it—Captain Grid-Iron is my favorite G.I. Joe figure from the 90s! A football-themed military leader may seem over-the-top, but that’s exactly what makes him so fun. With a helmet that resembled a football helmet and facemask, grenade footballs, and a no-nonsense attitude, Grid-Iron was a figure that combined sports and military action in a way that only G.I. Joe could pull off. Love him or hate him, he’s a figure you’ll never forget.
