Bryan Singer loves to share. Most of the major casting news on his X-Men films breaks on the director’s social media channels. He knows how to excite fans. So it’s no real shock that our first glance at Kodi Smit-McPhee in costume as Nightcrawler would come via Singer, boasting about his first day on set. Singer’s video soon disappeared, but Smit-McPhee had his back:
X-Men: Apocalypse will continue the X-Men saga in the years following the massively successful X-Men: Days of Future Past. Bryan Singer is staying with the franchise, and will transition it from the 1970s to the 1980s. (As you’ll recall, this whole timeline reboot really got underway with X-Men: First Class, set in the 1960s.) The decade shift allows Singer the unusual opportunity to reintroduce younger versions of classic heroes he dabbled with in his first X-Men movies. For example, Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Road, Let Me In) will play a younger version of the teleporting mutant Nightcrawler, who we once saw on screen in Singer’s X2: X-Men United, played by Alan Cumming:
