By Rob Panick
This week on Custom Action Figures: 101, we have a review of Reaper Miniatures’ Master Series Brushes and Pro-Brushes.
Reaper Miniatures History (from reapermini.com)
“Reaper Miniatures is a leading hobby and adventure industry company. Our primary focus is the design and manufacture of pewter miniature figurines, paint and accessories for hobbyist around the world.
Reaper Miniatures was organized by four talented individuals who wanted to create, and be part of, a company that was both exciting and challenging. Founded in Ft Worth, Texas on July 4th 1992, Reaper Miniatures quickly established itself as a leader in pewter miniature design and production. From its inception, Reaper Miniatures has worked closely with artist, sculptors and writers to create a community of endless adventure for consumers around the world.”
As with some of the other products we’ve reviewed, Reaper’s products are made for the wargaming miniatures world, but are excellent products to use for customizing figures. They have a great selection of paint brushes available that work extremely well with acrylic paints.
REAPER’S KOLINSKY SABLE MASTER SERIES BRUSHES
A kolinsky sable-hair brush is a fine artists’ paintbrush made with hair is obtained from the tail of the kolinsky, a species of weasel. Due to their exceptional ability to be finely shaped, kolinsky sable brushes are highly suited for use as fine detail brushes. Reaper Master Series is one of the few brushes that are available down to a 40/0, an extremely fine detail brush that is excellent for painting details such as eyes on action figures.
The Master Series brushes are available in sizes: Round #2, Round #1, Round #0, 5/0, 10/0, 20/0, 30/0, and 40/0. They are available at https://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/ … ush/latest
REAPER’S GOLDEN TAKLON SERIES BRUSH
Taklon is the common name for a synthetic fiber used in artist-quality paint. Taklon bristles are chemically etched at a microscopic level to mimic the structure of natural hair’s “scales”. Taklon bristles work very well with acrylic paints, as they aren’t subject to being attacked by the Ph levels of acrylics like natural hair brushes can be. Though there’s a slight trade off in precision, most Taklon brushes will work perfectly well for anything you want to paint on an action figure. Reaper’s Taklon brushes are also available as a flat “dry brush”.
You can get the Reaper Pro- Brush Golden Taklon in the following sizes: Flat #4, Flat #4, #2, #1, #0, 3/0, 5/0, 10/0. 20/0 and 30/0. They are also sold in two different “3 pack” assortments. They are available at https://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/ProBrush/latest
