Robert Downey Jr. Returns to Marvel as Doctor Doom in Epic Avengers Films

Get ready, Marvel fans! Robert Downey Jr. is making a grand return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but not as the beloved Iron Man. This time, he’s stepping into the villainous shoes of Doctor Doom for two epic Avengers movies: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
The thrilling news was unveiled by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige during Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel on July 27, 2024. The excitement didn’t stop there—Feige also announced that the dynamic Russo Brothers (Anthony and Joseph Russo) will be directing Avengers: Doomsday, set to hit theaters in May 2026.
In a jaw-dropping reveal, Downey Jr. appeared on stage concealed behind Doctor Doom’s iconic mask and green cloak. The anticipation reached a fever pitch as he removed the mask, sending the crowd into a frenzy.
“Same mask, new task,” Downey quipped to the electrified audience. The actor is embracing the dark side, taking on the role of the infamous Fantastic Four nemesis Victor von Doom, who will also be a key player in Avengers: Secret Wars, slated for a May 2027 release.
The buzz quickly spread across social media, with Marvel Studios’ official X account sharing the exhilarating update: “The Russo Brothers return to direct Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday, starring Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Only in theaters May 2026. #SDCC.”
