Just one month after it was announced that Ronda Rousey will star in MGM’s remake of the 1989 cult classic Road House, the project has found its director. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Nick Cassavetes (The Other Woman, The Notebook) has come aboard to helm the action-packed drama. Our initial report from last month revealed that the studio is currently meeting with screenwriters, and production is scheduled to begin sometime next year. The original Road House was released in 1989, starring Patrick Swayze, just two years after his breakout performance in Dirty Dancing.
The story centered on Patrick Swayze’s Dalton, who is hired to bring some order to the rowdiest bar in Missouri, known as The Double Deuce. Along with the nightly barrage of violent drunks, Dalton must also contend with a corrupt businessman, who is trying to destroy the bar and the small town along with it. Ronda Rousey will take over Patrick Swayze’s role, but little is known about her character. Before taking on the role, Ronda Rousey sought out the late Patrick Swayze’s widow, Lisa Niemi, to ask for her blessing in taking on the project, which she gave. Since the project doesn’t have a screenwriter attached yet, there is very little we know about the updated story thus far, and the characters that will surround Ronda Rousey in the lead role. Ronda Rousey is coming off roles in Furious 7 and Entourage earlier this year, and she also starred in last year’s The Expendables 3.
She is currently set to star as herself in My Fight/Your Fight, a biopic based on her life, along with Warner Bros. The Athena Project and STX Entertainment’s Mile 22. She will also return to the octagon to defend her UFC Women’s title against Holly Holm during UFC 195 on November 14. It’s possible that production on Road House will begin in early 2016, after Ronda Rousey’s UFC title fight, but since there isn’t a screenwriter attached, it may be a bit longer until this remake gets off the ground. Nick Cassavetes most recently directed the comedy movie The Other Woman, and his other directorial credits include She’s So Lovely, John Q, The Notebook, Alpha Dog, My Sister’s Keeper and Yellow. Do you think Nick Cassavetes is the right choice to direct Road House? Road House comes to theaters in 2016.
