When most fans remember the original Mobile Suit Gundam, they remember the RX-78-2 Gundam, the thunderous battles of the One Year War, and the legendary rivalry between Amuro Ray and Char Aznable. But hidden underneath all of those mobile suit battles is a much more personal story.

It is the story of a brother and sister who survived the destruction of their family, grew up under different names, and eventually found themselves standing on opposite sides of a war.

Before they were known as Char Aznable and Sayla Mass, they were Casval Rem Deikun and Artesia Som Deikun.

The Children Who Lost Everything

Casval and Artesia were the children of Zeon Zum Deikun, whose death changed their lives forever. With the Zabi family rising to power, the children were forced to live under different identities for their own protection.

Artesia eventually became Sayla Mass. Casval’s journey was considerably darker. He ultimately assumed the identity of Char Aznable and entered the military of the very government controlled by the Zabi family.

Behind his famous mask, however, Char was pursuing something much more personal than military glory: revenge.

Sayla took a different path.

After the attack on Side 7, Sayla became part of the crew of White Base. Surrounded by young people who had also been thrown unexpectedly into war, she gradually found another family.

Then the past suddenly walked back into her life wearing a mask.

Is That Really My Brother?

Sayla’s encounters with Char create some of the most emotionally charged moments in the original series. Beneath Char’s helmet and carefully constructed identity, she begins recognizing the brother she once knew.

For Char, seeing Artesia again exposes something the Red Comet normally keeps hidden. The cold and calculating Zeon ace still cares deeply about his younger sister.

But there is a problem.

Char cannot convince her to follow him.

Char and Sayla

Their relationship reaches one of its most important moments during the story surrounding the Texas Colony. The siblings finally confront the enormous distance that has grown between them.

Char has allowed revenge to define much of his existence. Sayla can understand the pain that created him, but she cannot accept the road he has chosen.

Char eventually makes an extraordinary attempt to separate his sister from the war. He sends Sayla a briefcase containing gold bars, giving her enough wealth to abandon military life and live safely.

The gesture reveals something important about Char. No matter how ruthless the Red Comet becomes, there remains one person he desperately wants removed from his world of violence.

But Sayla refuses to simply walk away.

Two Children, Two Different Roads

That is what makes the relationship between Char and Sayla so tragic. Neither truly stops caring about the other.

They simply respond to the destruction of their childhood in completely different ways.

Char looks backward. His life becomes tied to revenge against the Zabi family and the political world that destroyed the Deikun family.

Sayla increasingly looks forward. White Base gives her friendships, responsibilities and people worth protecting.

By the time the One Year War reaches its horrifying conclusion at A Baoa Qu, their lives have moved almost impossibly far apart.

Inside the fortress, Char’s legendary rivalry with Amuro becomes a literal sword fight. Sayla finds herself caught between them, desperately trying to stop the violence.

For a moment, the Red Comet disappears.

There is only Casval and Artesia again.

A brother and sister who once shared the same home, the same parents and the same tragedy are standing in the ruins of a war that has consumed nearly everything around them.

That may be why their story remains so powerful decades after Mobile Suit Gundam first aired in 1979.

The giant robots are unforgettable. The battles are legendary.

But underneath Char’s mask and Sayla’s White Base uniform is something far more human: two siblings who still love one another, even after life has made it impossible for them to walk the same road.
