Sorrell Booke: The Man Behind Boss Hogg and His Lasting Legacy

Story by Mitchell Smith

Hello everybody, Sorrell Booke was an American actor best known for his iconic portrayal of Jefferson Davis “Boss” Hogg on the hit television series The Dukes of Hazzard (1979–1985). With his signature white suit, cigar, and larger-than-life personality, Booke’s performance as the corrupt but often comedic county commissioner made him a household name. However, his career spanned far beyond Hazzard County, encompassing film, television, and theater, all backed by an impressive academic background. Sorrell Booke was born on January 4, 1930, in Buffalo, New York.

From a young age, he displayed a keen interest in acting. He pursued his passion academically, earning degrees from both Columbia University and the Yale School of Drama. His intelligence and linguistic abilities were remarkable—he was fluent in five languages, including Russian and Japanese, which later allowed him to take on a diverse range of roles. Booke performed in numerous Broadway productions, including “Fiorello!” and “The Iceman Cometh”., showcasing his range as a performer. Booke appeared in a variety of television shows throughout the 1960s and 1970s. He made guest appearances on series such as “Hawaii Five-O”, MASH, and “All in the Family”. In 1979, Booke took on the role that would define his career: Boss Hogg on “The Dukes of Hazzard”.

Sorrell also was in an episode of “Full House” in 1988 “Our Very First Christmas Show”, it’s a pretty funny episode if you have never watched that one. When I was a kid I had the Boss Hogg Matchbox car, it was one of my favorites. Sorrell Booke passed away on February 11, 1994, at the age of 64 after a battle with cancer. Though he is no longer with us, his legacy lives on through reruns of The Dukes of Hazzard and his extensive body of work. His portrayal of Boss Hogg remains one of the most memorable comedic villain roles in television history. Have a great week everyone.
