Freedom of the car

Every 16 year old dreams of getting a new car for their birthday, then if you don’t get one, you hope one of your good friends does so they can give you a ride to school. Then eventually most of us need to get a set of wheels to get to work and back. Sometimes you need to put it in the shop and that can be a pain getting a ride or walking to where you have to go. There’s no better feeling then jumping in the car and putting it in the wind and not have any worry on where you are going. Over the years I have had many different cars. I have had big trucks, little cars, new cars, and junk cars that were held together with duct tape. All in all I’ve always enjoyed the freedom of having a car. A few of my favorite cars I’d love to own someday, but probably wont, are a 57 Chevy, 1940’s Willys Jeep, and a Ferrari Spider.

Growing up I never had a big wheel, but I was about 8 years old when I got to drive the riding lawn mower for the first time. A couple years later I got my first crack at driving around the yard. We had an old international Scout with no bed, no doors, pretty much it was a frame, a seat, and a hood, we rigged up a boat can for its gas tank. It didn’t look good, but as a 10 year old it was one of the coolest vehicles I have ever driven. Once my brothers and I started driving on the roads, my father thought it would be a good idea to pick up a 1960s Oldsmobile or something like that, most of the modern cars today would have fit in the drunk of this thing, and you could land a jet on its hood. When I got older I went through a few new cars. 2003 I got a Chevy Trailblazer.

Living in snow country, I was loving the 4 wheel drive. Right around 2008 I ended up buying a used 1993 Mazda 626 off a family member. It was in great shape for it’s year. I drove it for about 6 years. I had become attached to it and in the end I was a little reluctant to see her go. I had owned plenty of new cars, but that Mazda had character. It had been through a lot. There were dents and scrapes. It wasn’t like the other thousands of generic new cars on the roads. It was my Millennium Falcon. I named her the “Fastest Hunk of Junk in the Galaxy.” That was the only car I have ever named. Now 2 years later, I’m glad I let her go. I’m always looking forward to driving new vehicles, I’ll leave you with a few things that I have had an opportunity to operate. A tractor trailer, a fire engine, a dump truck, a fork lift, and one of the coolest a Zamboni.
