X-Men ’97 Season 2 Delayed: New Return Date and Updates Revealed
In recent weeks, X-Men ’97 has been in the spotlight for some disappointing news. The animated series lost the “Outstanding Animated Program” Emmy to Netflix’s Blue Eye Samurai, and former showrunner Beau DeMayo has been making headlines with critical comments about Marvel Studios after his departure.
Despite these setbacks, X-Men ’97 remains a critical hit, and fans are eagerly awaiting the second season. However, according to a new report from Nexus Point News, Season 2 of the series won’t be returning to Disney+ until 2026. The delay is attributed to ongoing revisions of the story and scripts, with new Head Writer Matthew Chauncey reworking drafts originally penned by DeMayo before his exit.
Executive producers of the original X-Men: The Animated Series, Larry Houston, Eric Lewald, and Julia Lewald, will stay on as consulting producers, while the core voice cast is confirmed to return. Currently, no new casting announcements have been made.
Although the delay is a disappointment for fans, Marvel Animation won’t leave audiences empty-handed in 2025, with Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and Marvel Zombies expected to debut, alongside the potential release of What If…? Season 3.
In a recent Q&A, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, Brad Winderbaum, hinted at what to expect from Season 2. “There are many teams in Marvel with the letter ‘X’ that are followed by a hyphen…there are two other X-teams in Season 2,” he teased, raising anticipation for what’s to come.
Director Emi/Emmett Yonemura also praised Chauncey, calling him “a super sweet, incredibly talented writer” and expressing excitement for what Chauncey will bring to the table.
Set in the iconic 1990s era, X-Men ’97 follows a team of mutants who use their powers to defend a world that fears them, and they’ll be facing new and dangerous challenges in the upcoming season.
All episodes of X-Men ’97 Season 1 are now streaming on Disney+. Stay tuned for more updates.
