It looks like “X-Men: Days of Future Past” will feature obscure characters right alongside the headliners, much in the same way “X-Men: First Class” put little-known mutants like Darwin and Azazel alongside A-Listers like Magneto and Beast. This time it’s the much-beloved and fan-favorite Blink that has been plucked from the back issues and given a starring role, according to Deadline. The identity of Bingbing’s X-Man was overshadowed by news of Daniel Cudmore’s return as prominent X-Man Colossus. The news is bound to excite longtime X-Men fans, who have rallied around Blink.
Blink
Blink was originally created as cannon fodder for the 1994 event, “The Phalanx Covenant.” In the story, a Borg-like alien species called the Phalanx targeted the next generation of mutants for assimilation. Blink used her teleportation abilities to defeat the invasion and save her friends, sacrificing herself in the process.
Despite dying mere months after debuting, the overwhelming fan support led creators Scott Lobdell and Joe Madureira to include her in the epic 1995 event, “The Age of Apocalypse.” In this alternate reality, Blink never died and became a trusted member of a more gritty X-Men unit. The alternate reality Blink proved even more popular due to her unique character design and take-charge attitude. This version of the character then starred in pretty much every issue of the 2001 series “Exiles,” which ran for an impressive 100 issues. The series’ longevity was, in part, due to the unprecedented fan support the series amassed over its eight year run.
Back in the main Marvel universe, the original Blink was revealed as alive in 2009 and recently had a recurring role in the latest “New Mutants” series. As for the upcoming film, we’d put money on Blink being included on the ’70s X-Men alongside Beast and Xavier. With so few of the “First Class” cast confirmed for a return, it would make sense if young Xavier has recruited a whole new crop of mutants; Blink may well be one of them.
Even if we’re unsure of which version of the character Bingbing plays in “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” we can rest assured knowing that fans are probably already posting their Photoshop alterations of the actress as Blink to Tumblr.
