CONFIRMED: Bradley Cooper Is Duke in Danny McBride’s New G.I. Joe Movie!
YO JOE! One of the biggest G.I. Joe casting rumors of 2026 has officially become reality.
Bradley Cooper has been cast as Conrad “Duke” Hauser in Paramount Pictures’ upcoming G.I. Joe movie, putting one of Hollywood’s most recognizable leading men at the head of America’s daring, highly trained special mission force.
The news is especially exciting here at Serpentor’s Lair, because we were following this story months before the casting became official. Back on July 21, we reported that Bradley Cooper was being pursued for the role of Duke after early information began circulating about Paramount’s new approach to the franchise.
Bradley Cooper Is Officially Duke
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed on October 1 that Cooper has signed on to star in Paramount’s new untitled G.I. Joe movie, which will be directed by Danny McBride. Additional industry reports have confirmed that Cooper will specifically portray Duke, one of the most recognizable characters in the entire G.I. Joe franchise.
For longtime fans, this is a major development.
Duke has served as one of the central leaders of the G.I. Joe team since the height of the A Real American Hero era. With his trademark blond hair, tan military shirt and unwavering devotion to his troops, Duke became one of the faces of the franchise through the original action figures, Marvel Comics, Sunbow animated series and decades of subsequent G.I. Joe merchandise.
Serpentor’s Lair Reported the Cooper-Duke Story in July
For readers who have been following our coverage, today’s confirmation should sound very familiar.
On July 21, Serpentor’s Lair published our story:
Bradley Cooper as Duke? The G.I. Joe Movie Fans Have Waited Decades For May Finally Be Here
At that point, Cooper’s involvement remained unconfirmed. The information indicated that the actor was being pursued as the lead of Paramount’s developing G.I. Joe film, with the character widely expected to be Conrad “Duke” Hauser.
We stressed then that fans needed to wait for official confirmation before treating the casting as a done deal.
That confirmation has now arrived.
The question mark from our July headline can officially come off: Bradley Cooper is Duke.
Danny McBride Is Bringing G.I. Joe Back to the Big Screen
Just as important as Cooper’s casting is the filmmaker leading this new incarnation of the franchise.
Danny McBride is directing the movie and has been closely involved in developing the screenplay. McBride is a longtime fan of G.I. Joe, and this project will give him an opportunity to bring one of the defining action properties of the 1980s back to theaters for a new generation.
McBride and Cooper have also worked together previously, with Cooper appearing in McBride’s HBO series The Righteous Gemstones. Their reunion on a property as large as G.I. Joe instantly gives Paramount’s latest attempt at reviving the franchise considerable star power.
McBride will be making his feature-film directorial debut with the project after directing television episodes and building a successful career as an actor, writer and producer.
A Fresh Start for the G.I. Joe Movie Franchise
The upcoming film is expected to be a new reimagining of G.I. Joe rather than a continuation of the previous live-action movies.
Channing Tatum previously portrayed Duke in 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and returned for 2013’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Paramount later attempted another theatrical revival with Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins in 2021.
Cooper’s casting therefore represents another fresh beginning for the brand.
The previously discussed Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover movie is also reportedly no longer the direction Paramount is pursuing. Instead, McBride’s movie is being developed as its own G.I. Joe project, allowing the filmmakers to concentrate directly on the Joes, Cobra and the mythology that has kept fans invested for more than four decades.
Could This Finally Be the G.I. Joe Movie Fans Have Been Waiting For?
That is going to be the question hanging over the project until we see the first footage.
Bradley Cooper brings considerable dramatic and action experience to Duke. He has proven himself capable of portraying military characters, action heroes and complicated dramatic leads while also becoming an acclaimed filmmaker in his own right.
Duke needs an actor who can command a room without losing the character’s connection with the soldiers serving beside him. He is traditionally portrayed not simply as the man issuing orders, but as the soldier willing to stand beside his team when Cobra’s forces come crashing through the door.
For a new G.I. Joe movie to work, that sense of teamwork, brotherhood, military adventure and larger-than-life comic-book mythology will be crucial.
Cooper becoming Duke is one enormous piece of that puzzle.
Now Comes the Really Fun Part: Who Plays Cobra Commander?
With Duke officially cast, attention will inevitably turn toward the rest of the roster.
Snake Eyes. Scarlett. Roadblock. Flint. Lady Jaye. Stalker. Destro. Baroness. Storm Shadow. And, of course, Cobra Commander.
Who joins Bradley Cooper could tell fans a great deal about the scale and direction of Paramount’s latest attempt to build a successful G.I. Joe film franchise.
There is currently no announced theatrical release date, and many additional casting announcements are still ahead.
But today, one thing is finally official.
Bradley Cooper is DUKE.
